Summary
Few novels from the period examined in this study portray female artists as one of the main characters. Yet, the ones that do exist prove to be impressive representations of female creativity. All of these novels subtly criticize the contrast between the idea of feminitity and the notion of creativity, demonstrating how women artists constantly had to renegotiate their gender-specific positions as artists. Through close reading of the novels, which were often categorized as 'middlebrow', and consideration of their cultural and historical contexts, this study examines how writers such as Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Pym, and others question stereotypes of female creativity. The book offers a captivating look at narrative techniques that go beyond mere entertainment, opening a window onto a world in which these writers found their own artistic voices.
