Summary

Versailles Order and the Making of Albania, 1918–1926 offers a compelling analysis of Albania’s struggle for statehood in the aftermath of the First World War. Focusing on the diplomatic and political battles at the Paris Peace Conference, the League of Nations, and the Conference of Ambassadors, the study examines how Albania’s sovereignty and borders were debated, delayed, and ultimately recognised. The book explores the external pressures exerted by regional powers, Western allies, and Albania’s internal efforts to establish a modern state amidst institutional fragility, foreign occupation, and socio-economic backwardness. Drawing on various archival sources, this monograph reveals how early 20th-century diplomacy shaped Albania’s political destiny. It highlights the role of diaspora, elites, and Western-oriented reformers in resisting dismemberment and asserting national identity.
