    The scholarly series Studies in Early Modern European Culture aims at publishing scholarly works in the areas of Venetian studies, early modern and modern history, and cultural studies. The publications in the series originate from research work conducted at the CIES (Center for Italian and European Studies), the Boston University research centre located in Padova, Italy. The series includes monographs in English and Italian which reflect the interdisciplinary activities of the CIES. In exceptional cases, the series will accept also works produced by scholars not working at, or affiliated with, CIES.   • Modern French Identities

    This series aims to publish monographs, editions or collections of papers based on recent research into modern French literature. It welcomes contributions from academics, researchers and writers worldwide and in British and Irish universities in particular. Modern French Identities focuses on the French and Francophone writing of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, whose formal experiments and revisions of genre have combined to create an entirely new set of literary forms, from the thematic autobiographies of Michel Leiris and Bernard Noël to the magic realism of French Caribbean writers. The idea that identities are constructed rather than found, and that the self is an area to explore rather than a given pretext, runs through much of modern French literature, from Proust, Gide, Apollinaire and Césaire to Barthes, Duras, Kristeva, Glissant, Germain and Roubaud. This series explores the turmoil in ideas and values expressed in the works of theorists like Lacan, Irigaray, Foucault, Fanon, Deleuze and Bourdieu and traces the impact of current theoretical approaches – such as gender and sexuality studies, de/coloniality, intersectionality, and ecocriticism – on the literary and cultural interpretation of the self. The series publishes studies of individual authors and artists, comparative studies, and interdisciplinary projects and welcomes research on autobiography, cinema, fiction, poetry and performance art and/or the intersections between them.     Die Reihe Medieval to Early Modern Culture / Kultureller Wandel vom Mittelalter zur Frühen Neuzeit beschäftigt sich mit der weiteren Erforschung der janusköpfigen ‚Sattelzeit‘ des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts, die aus einer Vielzahl inhaltlicher wie fachlicher Perspektiven und fächerübergreifend in den Blick genommen wird (so z. B. unter den Begriffen Innovation vs. Tradition, Normative Zentrierung, Personen(selbst-)darstellung, moderne Verwaltungskulturen, Entfaltung der Medien der Symbolik, der Bildung und ihrer Institutionen, der Konstruktion der eigenen Vergangenheit wie ihrer Gegenwart und Zukunft).     This series of art historical studies concentrates on the periods from the Renaissance to Modernism. Topics classified under Contemporary Artwill only be included only in exceptional cases. Papers on Art are primarily aiming at the monographic investigation of sculpture, painting, graphic art, and arts and crafts, comprehensive studies will be incorporated on a case-by-case basis. The term monographic is used broadly, comprising monographs dealing with the œuvre of one artist, treatises considering partial aspects, as well as studies of a particular work. Diese Reihe kunsthistorischer Studien ist zwischen Renaissance und Moderne angesiedelt, die Kunst der Gegenwart sollte indes nur ausnahmsweise berücksichtigt werden. Primär steht diese Reihe für monographische Untersuchungen zu den Themenbereichen der Bildenden Künste (also Skulptur, Malerei, Graphik, Kunsthandwerk) offen, im Einzelfall können auch übergreifende Darstellungen aufgenommen werden. Zudem wird der Begriff monographisch bewusst weit gefasst: So kann es sich sowohl um Studien zum Gesamtœuvre eines Künstlers als auch zu Teilaspekten desselben handeln, desgleichen um Monographien zum einzelnen Werk.

  • Wor(l)ds of Change: Latin American and Iberian Literature

    "This series deals with the relationship between literary creation and the social, political, and historical contexts in which it is produced. The types of volumes may include critical analyses of one or more works by one or several authors; critical editions of important works that may have been out of print for a long time, but which represent a major contribution to literature of the Iberian Peninsula or Latin America, English translations of important works, with critical introduction. Topics for Latin America include: studies of representative works of nineteenth- and twentieth-century thought, poetic portrayals of history, subgenres (fictionalization of the rural and urban social structures); historical novels; literature of exile; re-readings of colonial texts; new approaches to the figure of the Indian and other representatives of transculturation; women writers and other less studied authors. Topics for Spain and Portugal include: writing and nationalism in the Spanish State; bilingualism and the literary texts; censorship and exile; new and renewed genres such as autobiography and testimony; the formation of the avant-garde. Formal studies are expected to bear out the general contextual focus of the series. The use of recent developments in literary criticism is especially appropriate. The series also seeks to contribute to the understanding and accuracy of interpretation of the writing which has combined European elements with indigenous and African ones as well as to the understanding of the dynamics behind such major cultural issues as the formation of literary trends or subgenres, national identities, the effects of postcolonial status on literary imagination, the appearance and experience of women writers, and the relationships between post-modernism and Ibero-American writing. The series title is inclusive of literatures which are geographically, historically, or politically related and whose comparison is relevant to Spanish and Spanish American writing. This means those written in the other three languages of Spain, in Portugal, and Brazil. Comparative studies in which colonial or post colonial themes are prevalent may also be appropriate, if one of the literatures is in either Spanish or Portuguese. The breadth of the geographical area is intended to provide a forum for revealing and interpreting its multicultural aspects."     Letteratura italiana (1796–1918) / Italian literature (1796–1918) / Littérature italienne (1796–1918)

    The series, directed by Claudio Gigante and Dirk Vanden Berghe, contains texts and essays on Italian literature of the nineteenth century, understood here in its widest chronological extension, from the first Napoleonic campaign until the end of the first World War; which represents as well the period in which the Risorgimento was fulfilled. The extent of the social and cultural changes that took place in the course of the nineteenth century was such as to influence the whole «Short Century» that would have immediately followed. For this reason, the Italian literary production of such a crucial phase in modern history deserves to be the subject of a specific series of studies, open to different methodological approaches but with a focus on research carried out directly on the texts. Contributions are welcome in Italian and in major European languages. All the volumes in the series «Il secolo lungo» are subject to a double blind peer review. La collana, diretta da Claudio Gigante e Dirk Vanden Berghe, ospita testi e saggi dedicati alla letteratura italiana del secolo XIX, inteso qui nella sua massima estensione cronologica, dalla prima campagna napoleonica alla fine della Grande Guerra: che rappresenta anche il periodo in cui si compì la parabola del Risorgimento. L'entità dei mutamenti sociali e culturali avveratisi nel corso dell'Ottocento fu tale da condizionare l'intero «secolo breve» che gli avrebbe immediatamente fatto seguito. Anche per questo, la produzione letteraria italiana di una fase così cruciale della storia moderna merita di essere l'oggetto di una collana di studi specifica, aperta ad approcci metodologici diversi ma con un'attenzione particolare alle ricerche eseguite direttamente sui testi. Verranno accolti contributi in italiano e nelle principali lingue europee. Ogni volume della collana «Il secolo lungo» è stato sottoposto a una doppia revisione paritaria anonima. La collection, dirigée par Claudio Gigante et Dirk Vanden Berghe, rassemble textes et études consacrés à la littérature italienne du XIXe siècle, période considérée ici dans sa plus ample extension chronologique, de la première campagne napoléonienne en Italie à la fin de la Grande Guerre ; ce qui en réalité coïncide avec l’ère du Risorgimento.     Bible in History focuses on biblical interpretation in different ages and countries and is a series dedicated to studies of biblical exegesis as well as to research about principles of interpretation relevant to interpreters of the Bible. The series is open to studies focusing on philological and theological aspects of particular Bible passages but it also welcomes publications in the field of history of biblical interpretation that study the development of new ideas and their impact on the interpretation of the text. Editions of textual variants as well as of influential old and modern commentaries are also within the scope of this series. Ayant pour but l'étude de l'interprétation biblique à travers les époques et dans des pays différents, la Bible dans l'Histoire est une collection consacrée à la recherche exégétique ainsi qu'à l'étude des principes qui déterminent la compréhension des commentateurs. Etant ouverte à l'exégèse biblique dans son aspect philologique et théologique, cette collection cherche par ailleurs à promouvoir les publications dans le domaine de l'histoire d'interprétation, ainsi que celles étudiant comment l'introduction des nouveaux principes a permis l'ajustement de l'ancien sens à la réalité d'aujourd'hui. L'édition des variantes textuelles ainsi que des commentaires anciens et modernes correspondent aussi au but fixé à cette collection.   • New International Insights/Nouveaux Regards sur l’International

    In tribute to the late founder of the collection, Eric Remacle, the editors have proposed to call this book series New International Insights. The novelty thus pursued consists of inviting prospective authors also to view the situations, case-studies and dynamics they analyse and conceptualise as innovative in an increasingly multipolar world order, more than as a mere continuation of past evolutions and theories. This is the approach characterising the editors' own research. Over a quarter of a century after the end of the cold war, Eurasian as well as Transatlantic, Asian-Pacific and pan-American constant innovations question most analytical conclusions almost as soon as they are reached. Yet, there is a need for theory. Examples would exceed the scope of this short presentation but a worthwhile illustration can be suggested : the turning point whereby an already innovative, sino-postsoviet Asia has proven capable, while still in its affirmative stage, to engage South Asia and construct a China-Russia-India triangle that offsets or even jeopardises most existing visions of Asia, notably neo-realist ones. Traditional visions thus yield to contemporary uncertainties. While non-State actors are still causing States to wither, withdraw or falter, new transnational and even transcontinental constructions are bringing States back in, however much around different objectives : logistical and commercial, while military cooperation appears a dated and questionable form of security enforcement. New International Insights aims at balancing book publications among authors of all intellectual origins, western as well as eastern, northern as well as southern. Only in this manner can it hope to take the vision of its early founders one step further. A post-modern world needs post-western epistemology in order to wield its new meaning. Manuscripts in political science and social sciences are encouraged for submission, preferably in English, not exceeding 650 000 signs. En hommage au fondateur de l’ancienne collection Regards sur l’international, Eric REMACLE, les éditeurs ont proposé de le renommer New International Insights. Leur objectif consiste à inviter les auteurs potentiels à considérer les situations, les études de cas et les dynamiques qu'ils souhaitent analyser et conceptualiser comme innovantes dans un ordre mondial de plus en plus multipolaire, plus que comme une simple continuation des évolutions et des théories passées. C'est l'approche qui caractérise les propres recherches des éditeurs. Plus d'un quart de siècle après la fin de la guerre froide, les innovations constantes eurasiennes, transatlantiques, asiatiques-pacifiques et panaméricaines remettent en question les conclusions les plus analytiques presque aussitôt qu'elles ont été formulées. Pourtant, il y a un besoin de théorie. Les exemples dépasseraient le cadre de cette brève présentation, mais une illustration valable peut être suggérée: le tournant par lequel une Asie sino-post-soviétique déjà innovante s'est révélée capable, tout en étant au stade de sa première affirmation, d’engager l'Asie du Sud et de construire une relation triangulaire Chine-Russie-India qui bouscule, voire remet en question la plupart des visions existantes de l’Asie, notamment les visions néoréalistes. Les visions traditionnelles cèdent ainsi aux incertitudes contemporaines. Alors que les acteurs non-étatiques provoquent toujours le recul, le retrait ou le trébuchement des États, de nouvelles constructions trans-nationales et même trans-continentales, font « revenir » les États, même si c’est autour d’objectifs différents: logistiques et commerciaux, tandis que la coopération militaire apparaît comme une forme datée et remise en question de mise en œuvre de la sécurité . New International Insights vise à équilibrer les publications de livres d'auteurs de toutes origines intellectuelles, occidentales et orientales, d’auteurs du Nord et du Sud. Ce n’est qu’ainsi que l’on pourra espérer faire avancer la vision de ses premiers fondateurs. Un monde post-moderne a besoin d’une épistémologie post-occidentale pour dévoiler sa nouvelle signification. Les manuscrits en science politique et en sciences sociales sont invités à être soumis, de préférence en anglais, n'excédant pas 650 000 signes, notes et annexes comprises.

    A modern phenomenon of the highest importance, sport raises a multitude of scientific questions. The collection Sports knowledge publishes original works in French and English across the spectrum of law, economics and social sciences. These subject areas correspond to the sectors of specialisation of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES), to which the collection belongs. The collection is directed by Denis Oswald, Doctor of Law, CIES Director and Honorary Professor at the University of Neuchâtel, and Raffaele Poli, Doctor of Geography, head of the CIES Sports Observatory. Phénomène moderne de la plus haute importance, le sport soulève des enjeux scientifi ques pluriels. La collection Savoirs sportifs publie des contributions originales en français et en anglais dans les champs des sciences juridiques, économiques et sociales du sport. Ces axes correspondent aux domaines de spécialisation du Centre International d’Etude du Sport (CIES) auquel la collection est rattachée. La collection est dirigée par Denis Oswald, docteur en droit, directeur du CIES et professeur honoraire à l’Université de Neuchâtel, ainsi que par Raffaele Poli, docteur en géographie, responsable de l’Observatoire au sein du CIES.

    Aims and Scope As the annual peer-reviewed publication of the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA), Recherche littéraire / Literary Research is an Open Access journal published by Peter Lang. Its mission is to inform comparative literature scholars worldwide of recent contributions to the field.     Nobody disputes the modern relevance of Marguerite Yourcenar’s work. Back in 1981, when she was the first woman to be elected to the Académie Française, her work was received enthusiastically, rather deferentially even; there was something of an aura surrounding it with the media attention her election attracted. But this time is now past and more recent research activity has taken a new turn, with critical attention focusing on Yourcenar’s roots in her own century. The study of traditional major themes – death, the sacred, nature, history etc. – has given way to the study of more comparative, theoretical issues such as the relationship between text and images, and more incisive issues such as ecology, gender, political activism etc. And her work seems to expand accordingly, offering up a seemingly inexhaustible supply of subject matter, not only through her novels but also through her novellas, her many essays, plays, letters and so on. The primary objective of the «Yourcenar» series is to publish monographs, collected volumes, conference proceedings and volumes resulting from doctoral research which will give our intended public of academics and Yourcenar devotees a regularly updated idea of the state of the art in the field. Cross-disciplinary approaches are encouraged. The intention is to publish two volumes per year, in either English or French. The collection is directed by Francesca Counihan (Maynooth University) and Bérengère Deprez (Université catholique de Louvain). L’actualité de l’œuvre de Marguerite Yourcenar ne fait aucun doute. Passé un moment de réception enthousiaste et plutôt déférente de ses écrits, auréolés et très médiatisés par son admission comme première femme à l’Académie française en 1981, il semble que la recherche ait pris un virage vers la critique attentive de l’enracinement de l’écrivaine dans son siècle. À l’examen des grands thèmes comme la mort, le sacré, la nature, l’histoire, etc., ont succédé des questions plus comparatistes, plus théoriques telles le rapport texte/image ou plus incisives telles l’écologie, la dimension de genre, l’engagement politique, etc. Et l’œuvre répond présente : la matière semble inépuisable, non seulement les romans mais les nouvelles, les nombreux essais, le théâtre, la correspondance, etc. La collection « Yourcenar » a pour ambition de présenter à un public universitaire académique ou non, ainsi qu’aux nombreux passionnés de l’œuvre de Marguerite Yourcenar, un état des lieux régulier de la recherche, par la publication de monographies, de volumes collectifs, d’actes de colloques et d’essais issus de thèses de doctorat.     The aim of the series Worlds of East Asia of the Swiss Asia Society is to publish high-quality, representative work issuing from academic research on all aspects of East Asia. It comprises, and receives, studies on present-day and historical East Asian cultures and societies covering the fields of art, literature and thought as well as translations and interpretations of important sources. Furthermore the series intends to present studies that offer expert knowledge on relevant themes and current questions appealing not only to the academic public, but also to an audience generally interested in East Asia. One important goal of the series is to establish a forum for academic work in the fields of the humanities and social sciences in Switzerland. However, the series is also committed to the rich variety of studies and writing on East Asia in the international research community. The main publication languages for studies, collections (by individual or several contributors), and surveys are therefore German, French, and English. The series is supervised and internally reviewed by an editorial board comprising leading representatives in East Asian studies. La série Mondes de l’Extrême-Orient de la Société Suisse-Asie publie des recherches de qualité représentatives de la recherche académique sur les cultures et sociétés de l’Asie orientale. Elle propose des études dans des domaines variés comme l’art, la littérature, et la pensée, anciens ou modernes, ainsi que des traductions et interprétations de sources. Elle publie également des travaux qui traitent de questions plus actuelles ou immédiates, de façon compétente mais abordable, avec le souhait de toucher, au-delà des cercles académiques, le grand public cultivé. L’un des buts de la série est de servir de forum pour les sciences humaines et sociales dans le domaine des études asiatique en Suisse. Les travaux de la communauté scientifique internationale sont cependant les bienvenus. Die Reihe Welten Ostasiens der Schweizerischen Asiengesellschaft stellt repräsentative Arbeiten aus der facettenreichen akademischen Forschung vor. Sie nimmt Studien zu den ostasiatischen Kulturen und Gesellschaften in Gegenwart und Vergangenheit in den Bereichen Kunst, Literatur und Denken sowie Übersetzungen und Interpretationen von Quellentexten auf. Sie will aber auch Arbeiten anbieten, die in allgemein verständlicher Weise kompetentes Wissen zu relevanten und aktuellen Fragen vermitteln und neben dem wissenschaftlichen Zielpublikum auch einer breiter interessierten Leserschaft zugänglich sind. In erster Linie ist sie ein Forum für geistes- und sozialwissenschaftliche Arbeiten aus der Schweiz, daneben werden aber auch Beiträge aus der internationalen Forschung aufgenommen.     In the series Realms of Judaism, founded in 1979, research studies from the fields of Jewish history, culture, religion, literature, philosophy and philology are published. Although the research areas cover the times from Antiquity to Early Modernity, Pre-modern Judaism constitutes the main focus of the series. The geographical space encompasses the Near and Middle East and European Judaism likewise. The editors of the series are scholars with various specialisations within the area of Jewish studies. In der seit 1979 erscheinenden Reihe Judentum und Umwelt werden aktuelle Studien aus den Teilbereichen Geschichte, Kultur, Religion, Literatur, Philosophie und Philologie des Judentums publiziert.     Histories of the Avant-Garde / histoires des avant-gardes

    If the past is continually retold in the present, as Walter Benjamin suggests, what can critical perspectives reveal and what do they obscure about the history of our modern time? Art and Thought: Histories of the Avant-Garde revisits and reconceptualises the histories of modernism, avant-gardism and postmodernism. Volumes in the series will each offer a critical perspective developed in response to specific cultural artefacts and their qualities. They will engage with literary, artistic and theoretical works, from the past as well as the present, and explore the interactions between literature, visual art, film and music, including the livre d’artiste. The series showcases work by new as well as established scholars, whether monographs, single- or multi-authored collections of essays, and new editions of salient or neglected primary texts in English or French, including original aesthetic works. Writing on translation as well as in translation is welcome. Walter Benjamin nous rappelle que le passé se dit au présent. Dans quelle mesure la pensée critique permet-elle d’illuminer notre histoire ? La collection Art et pensée : histoires des avant-gardes se propose de penser à nouveaux frais les problématiques liant les esthétiques de la modernité, de l’avant-garde et du postmoderne. Chaque volume répondra aux qualités ponctuelles d'objets esthétiques et culturels considérés par une perspective critique propre. Des œuvres de littérature, d’art et de réflexion y seront abordées, qui souligneront les rapports intimes de l’écriture, du visuel, de la musique, du cinéma. Les livres d’artistes ne seront pas oubliés. La collection présentera, en langue française ou anglaise, le travail critique de chercheurs établis ou en début de carrière. Elle offrira à ses lecteurs des monographies, des collections d’essais, des volumes collectifs, et des éditions nouvelles d’œuvres marquantes ou jusqu’à présent négligées, y compris les œuvres littéraires et esthétiques. Les œuvres en traduction nouvelle tout comme les travaux sur la traduction même seront vivement accueillis.
