Religions and Discourse

ISSN: 1422-8998

«Religions and Discourse» explores religious language in the major world faiths from various viewpoints, including semiotics, pragmatics and cognitive linguistics, and reflects on how it is situated within wider intellectual and cultural contexts. In particular a key issue is the role of figurative speech. Many fascinating metaphors originate in religion e.g. revelation as a ‘garment’, apostasy as ‘adultery’, loving kindness as the ‘circumcision of the heart’. Every religion rests its specific orientations upon symbols such as these, to name but a few. The series strives after the interdisciplinary approach that brings together such diverse disciplines as religious studies, theology, sociology, philosophy, linguistics and literature, guided by an international editorial board of scholars representative of the aforementioned disciplines. Though scholarly in its scope, the series also seeks to facilitate discussions pertaining to central religious issues in contemporary contexts. The series will publish monographs and collected essays of a high scholarly standard.

Germanica Pacifica

Germanica Pacifica is the academic series of the Research Centre for Germanic Connections with New Zealand and the Pacific of the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The Centre's primary objective is to encourage research on the historical and cultural links between New Zealand and the Pacific region on the one hand and the German-speaking countries on the other. Germanica Pacifica publishes monographs and collections of essays which highlight these cultural links. Reimagining Canada

Canada, in all its messy manifestations, is in transition, but where is it going? With foundational myths eroded, identities fragmented, allegiances contested, the idea of Canada in the hearts and minds of those who live there is under intense scrutiny and careful criticism. Canada’s place in the wider world is just as uncertain. Against a backdrop of COVID, Indigenization, decolonization, inflation, immigration, and shifting global politics, what might Canada mean in five, ten or fifty years’ time? Reimagining Canada seeks to understand the forces at work, and to ask what comes next. Taking a broad and inclusive approach to the study of Canadian culture, history and society, the series interrogates Canada’s past and present in order to suggest possibilities for the future. Relevant issues might include, but are not limited to: arts and culture; Indigenization; decolonization; digital spaces and media; the future of the Canadian constitution; globalization; healthcare and social services; immigration and multiculturalism; memory and memorialisation; and sovereignty. The series is open to scholars and public intellectuals working in all areas of the humanities and social sciences, and aims to be interdisciplinary or even post-disciplinary in its approach. The editors　are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and welcome contributions from scholars of marginalized groups and communities that tend to be disproportionately underrepresented within public discourses in Canada. As such, they strongly encourage scholars from these groups and communities to contribute to the series. Contributors are free to self-identify as desired. Books in the series are aimed at a more general audience than the traditional academic monograph. Readers might include undergraduate students, academics working in other fields, practitioners, policymakers, and the public. The series provides a platform for authors to reach a larger audience than usual, or to speak to new audiences; to deliver bold new arguments; to write unencumbered by the usual obligations for referencing; and to be exciting, provocative and even polemical.

Transamerican Film and Literature

This series publishes scholarly contributions to the growing and ever-changing fields of film and literary studies across the Americas. Written in English or Spanish, the titles in this series include edited volumes, books by single authors, and translations of scholarly monographs. They typically investigate film and literature of the Americas, examining works and trends in relation to form, genre, culture, politics, historiography, and diverse areas of theory. The term "Transamerican" implies transnational perspectives on creative work from all over the Americas, with an emphasis on new assessments of Latin American work, but is not constrained to studies of multiple national cinemas or literatures, and may venture beyond the Americas for comparative purposes. It also encompasses studies of single works or bodies of work from the Americas whose thematics or aesthetics warrant attention from a broad scholarly readership. The mission of the series is to provide a site of dialogue and new collaborations between scholars working on Transamerican film and literary studies throughout the Americas and other continents, emphasizing the region's growing diversity of critical and theoretical perspectives on film and literature. Esta colección estará dedicada a publicar materiales sobre el cine y la literatura que se producen en el continente americano. Los materiales podrán estar escritos en español o en inglés, y podrán ser libros colectivos, trabajos elaborados por un autor individual, traducciones de estudios especializados, así como ediciones o traducciones académicas de textos literarios. En todos los casos serán textos orientados al estudio del cine y/o la literatura en la región continental, en términos de forma, género, cultura, política, historiografía o diversas áreas de la teoría. El término "transamerican" implica una perspectiva transnacional en los estudios sobre trabajos creativos de todo el continente americano, con énfasis en la región latinoamericana, pero no se limita a los estudios sobre los cines o las literaturas nacionales de múltiples países. Critique sociale et pensée juridique

Marginalisée pendant plusieurs décennies comme une idéologie de combat ou une entreprise fataliste, la critique sociale est revenue en force tant à la faveur des relectures contemporaines du post-structuralisme qu’à travers les perspectives nouvelles ouvertes par les diverses figures du post-marxisme et du néo-pragmatisme. Un point commun de cette «　nouvelle critique sociale » est d’accueillir des recherches provenant de différents champs disciplinaires privilégiant les questions de théorie de l’action et de transformation des formes de participation collective. La présente collection propose de contribuer à ce mouvement en ciblant plus spécifiquement son impact sur la pensée juridique dans ses liens aux changements sociaux et ceci à travers deux séries spécialisées, l’une consacrées aux «　études idéalistes　», l’autre aux « études décoloniales　». De fait, ces deux traditions, l’une historique, l’autre actuelle, se rejoignent dans le projet d’identifier les conditions à remplir pour parvenir, collectivement, à une critique rigoureuse du pouvoir attribué à des systèmes juridiques constamment menacés par la réification de leurs pratiques et dès lors impuissants à accompagner les grands changements de société. La collection s’inscrit dans la tradition de recherche initiée par Jacques Lenoble, André Berten et Marc Maesschalck à l’Université de Louvain en théorie de la norme et en philosophie de l’action.

Sie engt nicht auf ausgewählte Kapitel der musikwissenschaftlichen oder tanzwissenschaftlichen Forschung ein, sondern versammelt Arbeiten aus dem Forschungsraum Salzburg/Österreich. Dabei ist an die Veröffentlichung von Dissertationen, herausragenden Diplomarbeiten, Monographien und Sammelbänden sowie Dokumentationen zu Symposien gedacht. Die Publikationen richten sich nicht nur an Fachwissenschaftler oder Fachbibliotheken, sondern vor allem auch an Pädagogen und Künstler sowie an alle Interessenten und Liebhaber von musikalischen oder tänzerischen Themen. In lockerer Folge sind jährlich ein bis drei Reihenbände geplant. Sie können in den Sprachen Deutsch, Englisch oder ggf. Französisch erscheinen.

La colección Humanistas españoles está dedicada desde 1991 a la edición textos de autores del Humanismo de los siglos XVI y XVII, ya sean españoles o tengan una relación, por su vida o por su obra, con España. Los autores y obras, en lengua latina o en castellana, que componen esta colección son inéditos o solo conocidos por ediciones de la época humanística. Por ello se presenta una edición crítica, acompañada de traducción en caso de tratarse de una obra en latín, con introducción sobre el autor y la obra, con dos tipos de notas, unas paleográficas y textuales, y otras con abundantes comentarios de contenido. Cada monografía se completa con sus correspondientes índices de antropónimos, topónimos y pasajes citados. La localización y estudio de manuscritos y ediciones en archivos y bibliotecas ha permitido recuperar y editar, de manera accesible, obras y autores poco conocidos de notable influjo cultural en España y Europa.

Language as Social Action

This Series explores new and exciting advances in the ways in which language both reflects and fashions social reality--and thereby constitutes critical means of social action. As well as these being central foci in face-to-face interactions across different cultures, they also assume significance in the ways that language functions in the mass medias, new technologies, organizations, and social institutions. Language As Social Action does not uphold apartheid against any particular methodological and/or ideological position, but, rather, promotes (wherever possible) cross-fertilization of ideas and empirical data across the many, all-too-contrastive, social scientific approaches to language and communication.
