Cultural Identity Studies

This series publishes new research into relationships and interactions between culture and identity, broadly conceived. Studies relating to intercultural or transcultural identities are particularly welcome, as the series is the publishing project of the Intercultural Studies research group at Dalarna University, Sweden. The series embraces research into the roles of linguistic, social, political, psychological, literary, audiovisual, religious and/or cultural aspects in the processes of individual and collective identity formation. Given the nature of the field, interdisciplinary and theoretically diverse approaches are encouraged. Work on the theorizing of cultural aspects of identity formation and case studies of individual writers, thinkers and/or cultural products will be included. The series welcomes intercultural, transcultural and transnational links and comparisons worldwide.

Cultural Media Studies

In the past few years, our political, cultural, and media landscapes have cultivated a sharp, notable rise of media activism, more representations of diverse groups and characters, and the need for intersectional approaches to media studies. The #MeToo campaign, the 2017 and 2018 Women’s Marches, Black Lives Matter marches, cross-border anti-feminicide activist marches, immigration marches, and increased representation of diverse sexual identities, racial/ethnic groups, and gender identities are evidence of the need for continued research on cultural media studies topics. The Peter Lang Cultural Media Studies Book Series is accepting book proposals for both proposed book and fully developed manuscripts on a rolling basis for media studies books that explore media production, media consumption, media effects, and media representations of feminism(s), race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and related topics.

German Linguistic and Cultural Studies

At a time when German Studies faces a serious challenge to its identity and position in the European and international context, this new series aims to reflect the increasing importance of both culture (in the widest sense) and linguistics to the study of German in Britain and Ireland. GLCS will publish monographs and collections of essays of a high scholarly standard which deal with German in its socio-cultural context, in multilingual and multicultural settings, in its European and international context and with its use in the media. The series will also explore the impact on German society of particular ideas, movements and economic trends and will discuss curriculum provision and development in universities in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Contributions in English or German will be welcome. This book series seeks manuscripts that focus on the critical analysis of the arts and cultures as they reflect, comment, or critique the history, political systems, religions, interethnic connections, economies, and historical and current problems of the multiethnic peoples of Central Europe from the Enlightenment era to the present. Books published in Studies in Central European Culture are explorations of the intellectual history and cultural movements, and their relationships to literature and other cultural representations such the theater, the fine arts, architecture, music, and philosophy. "Central Europe" for this book series is identified as the geographic region of Austria, the Balkans, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania, and the regions of the former Galicia and Bukovina during the Habsburg period, and the former East Germany. This series presents a new reading of Scottish culture, establishing how Scots, and non-Scots, experience the devolved nation. Within the context of a rapidly changing United Kingdom and Europe, Scotland is engaged in an ongoing process of self-definition. The series will deal with this process as well as with cultural phenomena, from debates about the relative value of Gaelic-based, Scots and Anglicised culture, to period-specific definitions of Scottish identity. Orally transmitted culture – from traditional narratives to songs, customs, beliefs and material culture – will be a key consideration, along with the reconstruction of historical periods in cultural texts (visual and musical as well as historical). Taken as a whole, the series will go some way towards achieving a new understanding of a country with potential for development into parallel treatments of locally based cultural phenomena. The series welcomes monographs as well as collected papers.

Warsaw Studies in Culture and Society

"The main aim of this book series is to cross borderlines of traditionally defined fields of studies: cultural anthropology, media and communication studies, sociology, political science, social geography and regional studies, history as well as social psychology. Contributions adopting comparative perspective and focusing on Central and Eastern Europe region are preferred; however other approaches and areas are also welcomed. Religious and theological reflection has often been confined to the realm of the private, the personal or the Church. In Europe this restriction of religion and theology can be traced back to the Enlightenment and has had long-lasting and pernicious consequences for the understanding of religious faith and society. On the one hand, there has been a rise in religious fundamentalisms around the globe, while, on the other hand, so-called advanced societies are constructed mainly along economic, pragmatic and rationalistic lines. Added to this is the reality that religious faith is increasingly lived out in pluralistic and multi-faith contexts with all the challenges and opportunities this offers to denominational religion. This series explores what it means to be religious in such contexts. It invites scholarly contributions to themes including patterns of secularisation, postmodern challenges to religion, and the relation of faith and culture. From a theological perspective it seeks constructive re-interpretations of traditional Christian topics – including God, creation, salvation, Christology, ecclesiology, etc. in a way that makes them more credible for today. It also welcomes studies on religion and science, and on theology and the arts. The series publishes monographs, comparative studies, interdisciplinary projects, conference proceedings and edited books. It attracts well-researched, especially interdisciplinary, studies which open new approaches to religion or focus on interesting case studies. The language of the series is English.

Until the publication of volume 16, the series was coedited by prof. Piotr Ruszkiewicz. The series will publish books addressing the nexus between language, culture and society. Contrastive studies are welcome in particular, whether of a synchronic or diachronic orientation. Various perspectives on language/communication are of interest: grammatical, pragmatic, sociolinguistic, discoursal and semiotic. A wide range of theoretical and methodological positions is accepted: cognitive /anthropological / corpus linguistics, as well as pragmatics, interactional sociolinguistics, (specialized) genre analysis, or critical discourse studies. The cutting edge of the series is to publish innovative research elucidating the processes of inter- and intra-language variation and change, and – at the same time – relating them to flows in and across cognate categories of culture, community and society. The series will publish monographs and edited volumes reporting on data-driven research that carries a potential for application in translation studies, language teaching, multilingual (multicultural) education, and interdisciplinary critical discourse studies. The languages of publication will be English and German, yet book proposals in other major languages will also be considered, if centrally contributive to the main aim of the series.

Until the publication of volume 6, the series was edited by prof. Barbara Michalak-Pikulska, and the title of the series was "Studies in Oriental Culture and Literature". The series aims to present contemporary research in the fields of Literary and Culture Studies encompassing the Chinese, Korean, Japanese cultural spheres, and the geographic area of Mainland China and Taiwan, Korean Peninsula, and Japan. Topics of interest include classical and contemporary literature, languages and writing systems, research on historical and modern East Asian cultures, as well as cross-cultural and comparative studies of the region. Of special interest are topics transgressing the traditional boundaries of Sinology, Korean, and Japanese Studies, presenting original, interdisciplinary perspectives. The series Studies in Linguistics, Anglophone Literatures and Cultures focuses primarily on various aspects of both theoretical and applied linguistics. Based on a broad understanding of Anglophone literature and culture, it approaches its topics either synchronically or diachronically. In principle, its monographs and collections of articles are devoted to the English language, literatures and cultures of the English speaking countries. However, comparative or contrastive studies are also welcome. The editors, as well as numerous contributors to its volumes, are affiliated with the University of Rzeszów, but researchers representing other academic centres are by all means invited to contribute individual monographs, or collections of papers. The range of topics and theoretical approaches remains unlimited in the case of all three disciplines.

Philosophy and Cultural Studies Revisited / Historisch-genetische Studien zur Philosophie und Kulturgeschichte

The main purposes of this series are philological and philosophical analytical reconstructions, and reinterpretations of philosophical writings. Under the terms "reconstruction" and "reinterpretation" is understood that such approach foregrounds the primary, alive philosophical idea. We assume that a precise philological analysis of source texts with the new analysis of philosophical concepts they are based on, can reveal meanings that have been obscured and distorted by the subsequent translations and interpretations. Without undermining the importance of the philosophical tradition, we ask what the authors have told us in their own language. We start with the strictly hermeneutic methodology: source texts are placed in the historical background, as they are not rigid constructs, but lively voices in a broader dialogue. Our object is to bring out the original meaning of texts. The language of the publication of the series is both English and German.

Studies in Philosophy, Culture and Contemporary Society

The aim of the series is to present classical philosophical thought and knowledge about problems and processes which take place in contemporary society. Such a perspective stems from the very relationship between philosophy and social sciences, which is both dynamic and reflexive. On the one hand, in its pure form as a ‘theoria,’ philosophical thought – even if sometimes abstracts from the social context – always remains an active observation that, in the long run, has an impact on social processes, and especially on social sciences. On the other hand, there is a reverse process in which social phenomena directly stimulate philosophical thought. As part of the series, we plan to publish monographs and volumes dealing with specific problems or social phenomena. Furthermore, the works of Polish societies, like The Polish Leibnizian Society and The Bachelard Society ‘Mythopaeia’, and others will be published.
