Critical Intercultural Communication Studies

Within Communication, culture is broadly understood as a meaning-making process that evidences itself within discourse, mediated forms, and interactional instances to constitute group autonomy. Within that meaning-making process, intercultural communication considers relationships between institutions and their societies, media and their audiences, and peoples and their communities. The formalized study of intercultural communication has always been problematic; like most disciplines and subdisciplines, its usefulness and limitations emerge from the historical context in which it is studied. Developed after World War II, intercultural communication initially served as an applied area of study to train U.S. governmental and business entities for relationships beyond U.S. borders. Then, out of the struggles of the U.S. Civil Rights era, intercultural communication expanded to concern itself with relationships between differing racial and ethnic groups. By the turn of the twentieth century, some intercultural communication scholars had fully embraced studying the differential power relations between nations, communities, and individuals thus catalyzing a body of research known as critical intercultural communication. Now, heading into the middle of the twenty-first century, critical intercultural communication has come into focus as an area of study that emphasizes, explains, and seeks to resolve power relations within specific contexts, applying theories and modes of inquiry suited to contemporary issues understood within their ongoing historical dynamics. As our institutions and their societies, mediated forms and their corresponding audiences, and communities and their members continue to alter and morph, critical intercultural communication adapts to interpret and envision progressive, socially just ways forward. This series, therefore, invites scholarship that challenges status quo cultural constitutions by recognizing and problematizing hegemonic modes of belonging and being. Spanning a range of contexts, critical intercultural communication considers symbolic and performative orders across local, national, hemispheric and transnational circuits. Moreover, this series fosters interdisciplinary conversations that innovate ontological and epistemological forms, advancing a range of systematic intellectual approaches to cultural transformation and validation. The series is particularly interested in works grounded in BIPOC, decolonial, feminist, queer, crip, and/or kink perspectives that construct claims, knowledges, and theories capable of guiding society toward new social justice knowings.

Sympaian - Jahrbuch der Internationalen Franz Werfel-Gesellschaft

Im Jahre 1995 gedachte man Franz Werfels 50. Todestag. Zu diesem Anlaß wurde die Internationale Franz Werfel-Gesellschaft (IFWG) mit Sitz in Wien gegründet. Die Gründung fand während des Symposiums "Musikalität bei Franz Werfel" am 21. Februar 1995 in Szeged im grünen Salon des Kaffees VIRÁG statt. Die IFWG setzt sich zum Ziel, das Verständnis der Werke Franz Werfels zu fördern und die geistige Hinterlassenschaft des Schriftstellers zu pflegen. Sie möchte insbesondere durch einen Gedankenaustausch der Forscher, Kenner und Freunde des Dichters in aller Welt sein Andenken bewahren, sein geistiges Vermächtnis ehren und dazu beitragen, seine hinterlassenen Werke zu veröffentlichen. Aus dieser Zielsetzung erwachsen der Gesellschaft eine Reihe spezifischer Aufgaben, unter anderem die Herausgabe des Jahrbuchs Sympaian. Neben einem Schwerpunktthema - im ersten Jahrbuch geht es um Musikalität bei Franz Werfel - berichtet das Jahrbuch über Dissertationen und Diplomarbeiten und verfügt über einen ausführlichen Rezensionsteil.

This series explores the history of schools and schooling in the United States and other countries. The series will examine the historical development of schools and educational processes, with special emphasis on issues of educational policy, curriculum and pedagogy, as well as issues relating to race, class, gender, and ethnicity. Special emphasis will be placed on the lessons to be learned from the past for contemporary educational reform and policy. Although the series will publish books related to education in the broadest societal and cultural context, it especially seeks books on the history of specific schools and on the lives of educational leaders and school founders. This series explores the history of schools and schooling in the United States and other countries. The series of books entitled Veröffentlichungen des Instituts für deutsches und europäisches Wirtschafts-, Wettbewerbs- und Regulierungsrecht der Freien Universität Berlin, published by the Institute for Energy and Regulatory Law in Berlin, presents studies carried out within the Department of Law. The editor Professor Franz Jürgen Säcker has hereby established a platform for the publication of monographs and anthologies in collaboration with the Free University of Berlin. From volume 48 this series will be continued as Veröffentlichungen des Instituts für Energie- und Regulierungsrecht Berlin . Die Buchreihe Veröffentlichungen des Instituts für deutsches und europäisches Wirtschafts-, Wettbewerbs- und Regulierungsrecht der Freien Universität Berlin präsentiert Studien aus dem Fachbereich der Rechtswissenschaft. Die Reihe "Hellenogermanica - Griechische Germanistische Hochschulstudien" wird von den beiden Abteilungen für Deutsche Sprache und Philologie in Athen und Thessaloniki sowie der Griechischen Gesellschaft für Germanistische Studien herausgegeben. Die Reihe umfasst u.a. Einzeluntersuchungen und Aufsatzsammlungen zu einem breiten Spektrum von germanistischen Forschungsthemen in den Bereichen Theoretische und Angewandte Linguistik, Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft der deutschsprachigen Länder, Übersetzungswissenschaft und Fremdsprachendidaktik. Dabei fokussiert die Reihe insbesondere jegliche komparatistische Forschungskontexte mit Schwerpunkt auf den griechisch-deutschen Kulturbeziehungen. Die Reihe wird von einem Wissenschaftlichen Beirat unterstützt, dessen Mitglieder über eine ausgewiesene Fachkompetenz in den genannten wissenschaftlichen Teilgebieten verfügen und eine beratende und evaluierende Funktion haben.
