This series deals with the Old Germanic languages and literatures. Linguistic monographs should be concerned with descriptive, historical, or comparative grammar, or with etymology. Literary studies should be limited to the period from the earliest documents to approximately the beginnings of the Early Middle Ages or Middle High (Low) German periods.

German Visual Culture

This series invites research on all aspects of German visual culture – including art, architecture, film and media – across different periods, geographical locations, and political contexts. Books in the series engage with aesthetic and ideological continuities as well as ruptures and divergences between individual creators, movements, educational systems, art institutions, and cultures of display. Challenging scholarship that interrogates and updates existing orthodoxies in the field is desirable. A guiding question of the series is the impact of German visual culture on critical and public spheres, both inside and outside the German-speaking world. Reception is thus conceived in the broadest possible terms, including both the ways in which visual culture has been perceived and defined as well as the ways in which modern and contemporary German creators have undertaken visual dialogues with their predecessors or contemporaries. The series welcomes cross-disciplinary approaches from art history, anthropology, material culture; the histories of science, perception, medicine, and technology; and the history of ideas. Issues of cultural transfer, critical race theory and related postcolonial analysis, feminism, queer theory, and other interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged, as are studies on production and consumption, the art market, pioneering publishing houses, and the mass media, including film and illustrated magazines. All proposals for monographs and edited collections in the history of German visual culture will be considered. Contributions in English and German are welcome. Submissions are subject to rigorous peer review. Professor Christian Weikop served as series editor from 2018 to 2025, with forthcoming titles still to publish in 2026. During this time as editor, he connected his Research Forum for German Visual Culture at the University of Edinburgh with the series. GLCS will publish monographs and collections of essays of a high scholarly standard which deal with German in its socio-cultural context, in multilingual and multicultural settings, in its European and international context and with its use in the media. Women, Gender and Sexuality in German Literature and Culture welcomes proposals for monographs and rigorously edited essay collections focusing on the work of women, queer, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming creators as well as the representation of women, gender and/or sexuality in literature, media and culture. The series contributes to efforts to broaden the German-language canon by publishing pioneering studies of relatively unknown writers, artists and filmmakers and cutting-edge assessments of more established figures. Studies of the history of women, queer, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming subjects in German-speaking cultures, such as the participation of women in German, Austrian, Swiss and exile intellectual life and the struggle for equal rights, as well as historical considerations of gender and sexuality in German-speaking countries, are also encouraged. Germanica Pacifica

Germanica Pacifica is the academic series of the Research Centre for Germanic Connections with New Zealand and the Pacific of the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The Centre's primary objective is to encourage research on the historical and cultural links between New Zealand and the Pacific region on the one hand and the German-speaking countries on the other. Germanica Pacifica publishes monographs and collections of essays which highlight these cultural links. Polono-Germanica

Schriften der Kommission für die Geschichte der Deutschen in Polen e. V. Deutsche und Polen haben ein höchst wechselvolle gemeinsame Geschichte hinter sich. Von deutscher Seite herrschte lange Zeit ein Gefühl der Überheblichkeit und der Ignoranz gegenüber seinem größten östlichen Nachbarn vor. Dies betraf auch die Wissenschaft. Im neuen Europa von Partnern geht es nun darum, nicht nur mehr Informationen über das deutsch-polnische Verhältnis zur Verfügung zu stellen, sondern Polen auch als gleichberechtigt wahrzunehmen. Dies kann jedoch nicht allein durch nationale Nabelschau gelingen, sondern nur durch ein höheres Maß an allgemeiner Reflexion, die Einbeziehung der Erfahrungen anderer Staaten sowie die Würdigung der spezifischen Rolle der Regionen. Die Reihe Polono-Germanica möchte besonders dazu beitragen, die Geschichte der Deutschen in Polen angemessen zu verstehen und zu würdigen, ohne in Schablonen zu denken.

The aim of the series is to offer contributions by North American scholars who have rediscovered once significant authors, genres or modes of production and consumption; reevaluated canonical or other texts and their contexts; or explored other forms of expression, such as journalism, letters or diaries. Estudos Germânicos

Estudos Germânicos is the publishing project of the Núcleo de Estudos de Línguas e Culturas Germânicas at the Universidade de Brasília, which promotes awareness of Germanic Studies in Brazil and throughout the world. The book series provides a forum for Brazilian and Portuguese-language scholarship on Germanic languages, literatures and cultures. A broader understanding of Germanic is encouraged, including research not only on German and Austrian but also on Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Afrikaans. The series is not limited to any particular field within literary studies, linguistics or translation studies and invites scholarship from the fields of anthropology, sociology, music, film studies and philosophy. An area of particular emphasis is the analysis of translations of all types of texts (literary, philosophical, sociological, etc.) both from and into the languages in question and their impact and distribution in the respective target cultures. This focal interest also implies that translations of scholarly works will be considered for publication. The primary language of the series is Portuguese, but publications in other languages will be considered. Proposals for both monographs and edited collections are welcome. A Estudos Germânicos é uma publicação seriada do Núcleo de Estudos de Línguas e Culturas Germânicas da Universidade de Brasília, o qual tem por objetivo promover e divulgar a pesquisa em áreas diversas dos Estudos Germânicos no Brasil e no mundo. Assim, pretende ser um fórum para a divulgação de trabalhos acadêmicos que versem sobre línguas, literaturas e culturas germânicas, compreendidas aí as realidades alemã, austríaca, holandesa, sueca, norueguesa, dinamarquesa e africâner. Os trabalhos publicados na Estudos Germânicos não se restringem aos campos dos estudos linguísticos, literários ou de tradução, e pesquisadores de outras disciplinas das ciências humanas e sociais, como antropologia, história, sociologia, música, cinema e filosofia, estão convidados a enviar seus textos. Francophone Cultures and Literatures

The Francophone Cultures and Literatures series includes studies about the literature, culture, and civilization of all French-speaking countries except France, i.e., studies on the Francophone areas of Africa, the French-speaking islands in the Caribbean, as well as studies that deal with the French aspects in Canada. Cross-cultural studies between these geographic areas are also encouraged. The book-length manuscripts may be written in either English or French.

Studies in the History and Culture of Scotland

This series presents a new reading of Scottish culture, establishing how Scots, and non-Scots, experience the devolved nation. Within the context of a rapidly changing United Kingdom and Europe, Scotland is engaged in an ongoing process of self-definition. The series will deal with this process as well as with cultural phenomena, from debates about the relative value of Gaelic-based, Scots and Anglicised culture, to period-specific definitions of Scottish identity. Orally transmitted culture – from traditional narratives to songs, customs, beliefs and material culture – will be a key consideration, along with the reconstruction of historical periods in cultural texts (visual and musical as well as historical). Taken as a whole, the series will go some way towards achieving a new understanding of a country with potential for development into parallel treatments of locally based cultural phenomena. The series welcomes monographs as well as collected papers.

This new series is a forum for the investigation and analysis of the contested terrain between culture, gender, and sexuality. Titles in the series can include, but are not limited to, (re)theorizations of gender in relation to, or its constitution through, sexuality, race, dass, or culture, studies of sexuality and sexual identity that produce new understandings of gender, or new inquiries into culture, broadly defined, that raise competting implications for the ways in which we think about gender and sexuality in the contemporary social world. Of particular interest are manuscripts that cirtique and/or broaden traditional constructions of gender and take into account sexuality, race, dass, or the pressures of other constitutive categories, analyze nonwestern literary and cultural representations of gender and their relationship to sexuality, especially in postcolonial contexts, and theorize transgender from feminist, queer, postcolonial, or cultural studies frameworks.
