Historical Sociolinguistics

The interdisciplinary field of Historical Sociolinguistics seeks to reveal the impact of language development on society and the role of individuals and society in the changing forms and usage of language. This book series is aimed at sociolinguists and social historians who are keen to publish studies on the social history of languages, the interaction of linguistic practices and society, and the sociological significance of linguistic variation with a historical dimension. The purpose of the series is to provide empirically supported studies that will challenge and advance current language historiographies, which often continue to present the history of particular languages as necessarily leading to the creation of a standard or prestige variety. Of particular interest are topics such as the following: language myths and language ideology, historical multilingualism and the formation of nation-states, the sociolinguistics of minority and regional languages, the rise of urban vernaculars, immigrants and their languages, the role of prescriptive grammarians, and the social history of pidgins and creoles. Book proposals from historians and linguists working on any language in any period are welcome, in particular those that include a comparative dimension as well as those with a strong empirical foundation. The language of publication is primarily English, though other languages may be considered. The editors guarantee that all publications in this series have been submitted to external and anonymous peer review. Revisioning Philosophy

This series seeks innovative and explorative thought in the foundation, aim, and objectives of philosophy. Preference will be given to approaches to world philosophy and to the repositioning of traditional viewpoints. New understandings of knowledge and being in the history of philosophy will be considered. Works may take the form of monographs, collected essays, and translations which demonstrate the imaginative flair of examining foundational questions.

The series “Practical Philosophy controversial” publishes studies from the disciplines of political philosophy, theoretical ethics, and applied ethics. It is a philosophical forum which seeks to make a contribution to contemporary controversies and debates surrounding societal challenges. Studies in Historical Linguistics

Studies in Historical Linguistics brings together work which utilises the comparative method of language study. Topics include the examination of language change over time, the genetic classification of language, lexicography, dialectology and etymology. Pronunciation, lexis, morphology and syntax are examined within the framework of historical linguistics. Both synchronic and diachronic approaches are used so that language is examined both at one time and across time. Historical Linguistics is still a young area of academic study, but it has its foundations in one of the oldest - philology. This series recognises both the seminal importance of philology, and the recent development through the conceptual framework provided by linguistic science. Studies in Historical Linguistics is based at the Department of Media, Culture and Languages at the University of Roehampton.

Philosophy and Cultural Studies Revisited / Historisch-genetische Studien zur Philosophie und Kulturgeschichte

The main purposes of this series are philological and philosophical analytical reconstructions, and reinterpretations of philosophical writings. Under the terms "reconstruction" and "reinterpretation" is understood that such approach foregrounds the primary, alive philosophical idea. We assume that a precise philological analysis of source texts with the new analysis of philosophical concepts they are based on, can reveal meanings that have been obscured and distorted by the subsequent translations and interpretations. Without undermining the importance of the philosophical tradition, we ask what the authors have told us in their own language. We start with the strictly hermeneutic methodology: source texts are placed in the historical background, as they are not rigid constructs, but lively voices in a broader dialogue. Our object is to bring out the original meaning of texts. The language of the publication of the series is both English and German.

Cette collection a pour objectif de promouvoir des recherches philosophiques se situant au croisement de l’anthropologie et de la philosophie sociale. L’hypothèse fondamentale est qu’une philosophie sociale soucieuse d’interroger de façon à la fois descriptive et critique les modes contemporains de constitution du lien social ne peut manquer de questionner les présupposés anthropologiques qui sous-tendent son interrogation. Inversement, toute recherche sur les dimensions essentielles de la condition humaine se doit d’interroger la façon dont celles-ci sont chaque fois mises en jeu et recomposées par le contexte social-historique au sein duquel les individus se trouvent. Attentive à la vulnérabilité radicale de la vie individuelle et collective tout autant qu’à sa puissance de création, cette collection vise à faire de l’anthropologie et de la philosophie sociale l’envers et l’endroit d’un même mouvement de recherche portant sur la vie subjective et sa socialité originaire. Dans cette perspective, il s’agit, pour une part, de favoriser la reprise de concepts anthropologiques récents ou provenant de l’épaisseur de l’histoire de façon à les rendre opératoires pour une philosophie sociale questionnant ses propres présupposés anthropologiques. Il s’agit, pour une seconde part, de permettre aux recherches effectuées en anthropologie de questionner leurs présupposés normatifs. Une telle collection désire ainsi ouvrir un espace de réflexion informé par un double mouvement, celui de l’anthropologie vers la philosophie sociale, celui de la philosophie sociale vers l’anthropologie.

Dia-Logos. Studies in Philosophy and Social Sciences is a peer-reviewed book series publishing valuable monographs and edited volumes on various aspects of philosophy and social sciences. The series is intended to be an interdisciplinary forum of deliberation according to our firm belief that challenges of the contemporary world require common and multilevel research. The Dia-Logos series does not represent a single ideology or school of thought, but it is open to different trends and various styles of reflection, trying to understand better the contemporary world. We invite the submission of manuscripts of monographs and edited volumes from academic philosophers and social scientists.

Studies in Philosophy, Culture and Contemporary Society

The aim of the series is to present classical philosophical thought and knowledge about problems and processes which take place in contemporary society. Such a perspective stems from the very relationship between philosophy and social sciences, which is both dynamic and reflexive. On the one hand, in its pure form as a ‘theoria,’ philosophical thought – even if sometimes abstracts from the social context – always remains an active observation that, in the long run, has an impact on social processes, and especially on social sciences. On the other hand, there is a reverse process in which social phenomena directly stimulate philosophical thought. As part of the series, we plan to publish monographs and volumes dealing with specific problems or social phenomena. Furthermore, the works of Polish societies, like The Polish Leibnizian Society and The Bachelard Society ‘Mythopaeia’, and others will be published.

The "Warsaw Studies in Philosophy and Social Sciences" aims to showcase new work from Poland, and possibly from other Central and East European countries dealing with wide range of current and traditional issues of philosophy and social sciences.
