This series focuses on the political, economic and cultural changes in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It offers a platform for inter-disciplinary research on this multifaceted part of the world. The focus lies mainly on current and recent developments in societies and political systems; but research on cultural and historical backgrounds has its place here, too. The range of disciplines includes political science, history, and social anthropology, but also philosophy, cultural studies, and literary criticism. The articles are written in English.

The series covers the proceedings of the Sofia Conferences on Sustainable Economic and Social Development (SCSESD). The conferences are organized by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FEBA) of Sofia University in cooperation with the University of Cologne. They serve as a platform for encounters between Southeastern European scientists and colleagues from other regions, especially from Germany, Switzerland, Russia, and the USA. Thus the topics cover both, aspects of the social and economic situation in Southeast Europe as well as findings and ideas which might be useful for the further development of Europe, countries formerly under Communist rule, and the world. "Europe of Cultures" is a series of studies, monographs, stories, research projects, reports on conferences and debates devoted to the complexities and changing realities in European societies. It bridges the past with the future at the cross road of challenges and opportunities of the transformation of European societies. The management of changes in societies refers to the interconnection of various dimensions and levels of policy-making impacting on economic, social, political, democratic, communication, philosophical, artistic, religious as well as ethical traditions and behaviour. As an editorial project the series is structured along two interconnected and complementary sub-series: i.e. the "(Europe of) Dialogues" series and the "(Europe of) Living Stories". The sub-series "(Europe of) Dialogues" mainly deals with (cultural) diversities, identity and citizenship building in Europe as well as with the relevant multi-level governance and communication structures in the transformation of European societies. Europe is a laboratory for understanding this multi- and intercultural reality. The purpose is to contribute to a better understanding and communication of the changes taking place by looking at the European societies in general, and the specificities of different national, regional and local cultures and communities in a framework of dialogues. The series presents interdisciplinary and critical views of value-driven and policy-oriented reflections. Moreover, it offers new insights into understanding how to manage, value and communicate cultural diversity, identity and citizenship. It also wants to contribute to the development of new ways of "living together", in which cultures and communities are perceived as binding forces in creative society building. The sub-series "(Europe of) Living Stories" (the former "Mémoires de l’Europe en devenir", Director Gabriel Fragnière) is devoted to inspiring narratives for a broad public with a view to contribute to a better understanding, communication and contextualisation of the newly emerging Europe. It mainly focusses on stories, memories and testimonies of persons, events, institutions and issues that have transformed mentalities, fostered European awareness and finally shaped Europe’s future. These stories serve as important references and communication tools for future developments of Europe in the world. This collection wants to be open and diverse, original and dynamic in its content, method and pedagogy faithful to Europe’s role and reference in the globalising world. "Europe des cultures" est une collection d'études, de monographies, d’essais, de récits, de recherches et de compte-rendu de conférences et de débats consacrés à la complexité et l'évolution des réalités dans les sociétés européennes. The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology

“The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology” is a peer-reviewed annual. It includes contributions about the history of phenomenology because phenomenology has its own specific development anchored in the texts of Edmund Husserl, his predecessors and followers, its distinctive themes and problems set within the frame of the philosophical and scientific discussions of their period. The yearbook is open to inquiries about the interpretation of phenomenology and to different approaches towards understanding phenomenological research, its systematic and methodological insights and its possible contributions to contemporary discussions both about pure philosophy and within the context of more interdisciplinary research. It is also open to broader discussions with other philosophical schools of thought. Volume 5 terminates the series.

Europe plurielle/Multiple Europes

The series «Multiple Europes» is multiple in two ways: it understands Europe in an interdisciplinary manner with a strong historical perspective, and it understands Europe as being inserted in transnational and global contexts. On both levels, the perspectives on Europe and the very role and understanding of Europe is multiple. The special emphasis of the series thus lies in understanding the pasts of Europe as well as its complex present. The history of Europe and the history of European integration have influenced each other in the past and will continue to do so in the future. There is an inbuilt tension in the relation between European history and the history of European integration. Europe signifies a space and semantics much broader and more complex than the EU. The relations between ideas of Europe, European history, global history and European integration need to be faced more openly. In order to do this, an open dialogue between academic disciplines is just as necessary as critical self-reflection within each discipline. Furthermore, European history was preoccupied with looking at itself and needs to be connected to global relations. La collection « Europe plurielle » tente d’’analyser à la fois la richesse du passé dont l’’Europe est issue et la complexité de son présent à travers une lecture transdisciplinaire, historique et globale – en un mot : plurielle. L’’histoire de l’’Europe et l’’histoire de l’’intégration européenne se sont influencées mutuellement dans le passé et continuent à le faire. Il existe, en effet, une tension inhérente entre elles. Mais le terme « Europe » renvoie à un espace et à un signifié bien plus amples et complexes que celui d’’« Union Européenne ». Par ailleurs, l’’histoire européenne s’’est trop longtemps penchée sur elle-même et doit à présent s’’articuler aux relations internationales en général. Les relations entre l’’idée de l’’Europe, l’’histoire européenne, l’’histoire mondiale et l’’intégration européenne doivent donc être abordées de façon plus large dans un dialogue interdisciplinaire qui intègre également une réflexion critique à l’’intérieur de chaque discipline. Higher Education and Civic Democratic Engagement

How might we interrogate and reimagine the impact of civic, democratic engagement across higher education? This series invites narratives and new studies that critically and creatively explore the possibilities and limitations of civic, democratic engagement within higher education. The editors seek to gather inclusive, imaginary, transdisciplinary scholarship exploring the impact of next generation civic, democratic engagement from a diverse range of voices. Among others, we hope these voices will include international and indigenous perspectives, members from a diverse array of communities, researchers from across disciplines, teacher-scholars, practitioners and activists, undergraduate and graduate students, politicians, businesses, and different forms of administration. The editors invite proposals that critically examine historical, cultural, and structural dimensions of impact while exploring innovative strategies for disrupting and recreating more inclusive, liberatory, and plural forms of civic democratic engagement. The editors welcome and encourage a wide-range of formats including, but not limited to, narrative studies, ethnographies, mixed method studies, case studies, socio-cultural and/or historical analyses, theoretical treatises from multiple theoretical lens as well as reports and toolkits that support efforts to examine the impact of civic democratic engagement. Reflections on Signs and Language

This book series proposes themes that are generally associated with the so-called language and sign sciences, in the first place semiotics, linguistics and philosophy of language, inclusive of literary language. It also focuses on problems that interest the communication sciences, including mass-medial communication and the question of translation. However, the perspective is not limited to any one of these disciplinary spheres. Moreover, the series intends to propose a vision that is critical, open and dialogic, which means to say developed in terms of interdisciplinary dialogue. Such an approach is proficuous if it is not limited to encounter among specific disciplines, competencies and interests at a scientific level alone. In fact, a priority characterising this series is to create the conditions for encounter between the sciences of signs, language and communication, on the one hand, and the problems of everyday life which are closely involved, indeed are engendered in them, on the other. We live in a world where life overall as much as the life of each one of us depends increasingly on signs, language and communication. But there’s more: not only human life, but life in general, as biosemiotics now evidences unequivocally, consists of communication and is made of signs. We are looking forward to receiving contributions from all over the world, mindful of the series’ interdisciplinary orientation, characteristics and interests. Submissions should be written in English and will be peer-reviewed by the relevant specialists.

The series Language Competence and Language Awareness in Europe unites interdisciplinary linguistic research with a thematic focus on multilingualism, linguistic choices and linguistic variability, language contact processes in Europe – and beyond its boundaries – as well as situated speech practices and literacy skills in private and public spaces. The series editor Amei Koll-Stobbe welcomes manuscript proposals, especially data orientated analyses of language competence cum performance with a priority on basic research (without any restrictions regarding theoretical and methodological frameworks). Prior to publication, the quality of the works published in this series is reviewed by external referees appointed by the editor. In der Buchreihe Sprachkönnen und Sprachbewusstsein in Europa erscheinen vorwiegend Sammelbände aus Linguistik und Anglistik. Der thematische Fokus liegt auf der Sprachkontaktlinguistik, auf Aspekten von Sprachwahl und Sprachvariabilität in nationalen Sprachgrenzen – oder über diese hinweg – sowie auf situierten Sprachpraktiken (und literacy skills) in privaten und öffentlichen Räumen. Die Herausgeberin Amei Koll-Stobbe freut sich über Publikationsvorschläge v.a. aus dem Bereich der datenorientierten Analyse von sprachlicher Kompetenz cum Performanz mit einer grundlagenforschungsorientierten Ausrichtung (Beschränkungen auf bestimmte Untersuchungsmethoden oder Rahmentheorien gibt es nicht). Die Qualität der in dieser Reihe erscheinenden Arbeiten wird vor der Publikation durch externe, von der Herausgeberin benannte Gutachter geprüft.

The series is designed to advance the publication of research pertaining to themes and motifs in literature. The studies cover cross-cultural patterns as well as the entire range of national literatures. They trace the development and use of themes and motifs over extended periods, elucidate the significance of specific themes or motifs for the formation of period styles, and analyze the unique structural function of themes and motifs. By examining themes or motifs in the work of an author or period, the studies point to the impulses authors received from literary tradition, the choices made, and the creative transformation of the cultural heritage. The series will include publications of colloquia and theoretical studies that contribute to a greater understanding of literature.

Crystallization of human groups in order to constitute a place of citizenship is a complex phenomenon associating elements of identification and distinction: language, geographical origins, social classes, religion, political commitment. Through a multidisciplinary perspective, this collection brings together the works about the common research problem of «civic dynamics», itself concentrated on two main converging aspects: «secularism and religion»; «citizenships and identities». The home market, the Euro, strong international cooperation, economic success and peace in Europe will work better and with more stability, or at least less difficulty, the more multilin-gual Europeans are. While the institutional EU has done a lot to pursue the targets (since 2007, there have been a separate fund and a Commissioner for Multilingualism), the situation in the individual countries continues to differ widely. The result is that the multilingual abili-ties of European citizens and societal multilingualism, including diglossia, vary from country to country. The series Multilingualism in Europe seeks to contribute from different perspectivesto a bet-ter definition of the phenomenon of multilingualism, providing theoretical and practical sup-port on how multilingualism can be explored and promoted and how it can work effectively. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome in the following areas: • Linguistics • Neurolinguistics • Psychology • Didactics of multilingualism • Politics • History • Sociology • Political Sciences • Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies Le marché européen, l'Euro, l’importante coopération internationale, la réussite économique et la paix en Europe sont d’autant plus stables et fonctionnent d’autant mieux si la plupart des citoyens européens sont plurilingues. L’UE a fait suivre ses objectifs de mesures concrètes (depuis 2007, il y a un commissaire à l'éducation, à la culture, au multilinguisme et à la jeunesse), cependant la situation dans les différents pays européens reste très hétérogène : les compétences plurilinguistiques des citoyens européens et le multilinguisme sociétal, y compris la diglossie varient d'un pays à l'autre. La collection « Multilinguisme en Europe » a comme objectif d’apporter une contribution en analysant ces questions sous des angles divers, en cernant le phénomène du multilinguisme et en fournissant des apports théoriques et pratiques qui permettent de promouvoir le multilinguisme et le savoir comment celui progresse de manière efficace. Les domaines scientifiques suivants constituent le point de départ, l’interdisciplinarité y est dominante : • linguistique • neurolinguistique • psychologie • didactique du plurilinguisme • histoire • sociologie • sciences politiques • littérature et civilisations comparées Binnenmarkt, Euro, intensive internationale Zusammenarbeit, wirtschaftlicher Erfolg und Friede in Europa können umso besser und stabiler bzw. überhaupt störungsfrei funktionieren, wenn möglichst viele EuropäerInnen mehrsprachig sind. Während die EU institutionell den Zielvorgaben konkrete Taten hat folgen lassen (seit 2007 gibt es ein eigenes Portfolio und damit einen eigenen Kommissar für Mehrsprachigkeit), sieht die Lage in den einzelnen Ländern weiterhin sehr unterschiedlich aus. Die Folge: Die Mehrsprachenkompetenz der europäischen BürgerInnen und die gesellschaftliche Mehrsprachigkeit inklusive der Diglossie variieren von Land zu Land. Die Reihe Mehrsprachigkeit in Europa möchte einen Beitrag dazu leisten, das Thema aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln zu analysieren, das Phänomen der Mehrsprachigkeit besser zu definieren und theoretische und praktische Hilfestellungen dahin gehend zu geben, wie Mehrsprachigkeit erforscht und gefördert werden kann und wie sie effizient funktioniert.
