German Life and Civilization

German Life and Civilization contributes to a critical understanding of Central European cultural history from medieval times to the present. Culture is here defined in the broadest sense, comprising expressions and representations in literature, music, performative and pictorial arts, and media, as well as political and sociohistorical developments in the texture of everyday life. Building on its strengths in GDR scholarship and political literature, the series also seeks to explore newer thematic trends such as human entanglements with the environment and natural world, and transnational and minority communities. The series aims to foster progressive and inclusive scholarship that aspires to a synthetic view of culture by crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries. Manuscripts in both English and German are subject to a robust external peer review process. Studies in Life Writing

Studies in Life Writing: Biography, Autobiography, Memoir welcomes full-length studies of life writing in all its forms: biography, autobiography, memoir, journals, diaries, blogs, and so forth. Dovetailing nicely with the critical theories of the later twentieth century, life writing questions the divide between fact and fiction, challenges the possibility of presenting a life objectively, and examines how the shaping forces of language and memory prohibits any simple attempts at truth and reference. Provocatively, interest in life writing has increased as both autobiographical and biographical narratives have become a major presence on the Internet, and the growth of literary nonfiction has prompted a resurgence of life narratives and memoirs. The series invites both single-authored book-length studies and multi-authored essay collections on the theory and/or pedagogy of life writing.

"Both at home and abroad religion is recognized as an important factor in many aspects of life-political, cultural, and economic. To assist an informed public debate, this series publishes innovative studies of unquestionably high standards of scholarship an the role of religion and religiously motivated convictions in politics and public life. Preference is given to interdisciplinary and comparative approaches that explore the historical, conceptual, and normative issues that come to bear an the political and public rote of religion, as well as the nature of values and structures of arguments relevant to general policy concerns. The books in this series include monographs, anthologies, and textbooks. They are of particular lnterest to political scientists, historians, philosophers, theologians, and legal and social analysts. Of German origin Ferdinand von Mueller migrated to Australia in 1847. Government Botanist of Victoria for 43 years until his death in 1896, he was Australia's greatest scientist of the 19th century – a major contributor to international science, an intrepid explorer of parts of Australia previously unknown to Europeans, and a dominant figure in the scientific and intellectual life of his adopted country. Throughout his working life, Mueller kept up an enormous correspondence. Large numbers of letters by or to him have been located, scattered throughout the world, and edited for publication. This book series can be seen as a bridge that brings different worlds and directions of psychology together. The essence of the work proposed in this book series concerns mainly the biopsychological foundations of life in educational and health related fields. The world of the psychology of the Islamic cultural area, for example, is largely unknown for the western readers up to now. Therefore, concepts and research methods from „western" psychology, which are taught and researched around the world, are transferred and applied to questions, to contexts of the Islamic cultural area and to the related Islamic Psychology. Through the contributions in this book series, the content-related concepts, the research approaches and the ways of thinking of the Islamic psychology in educational and health related psychological fields become visible and known for all the western psychologists and researchers. In this way it is possible to create a substantial exchange in which all directions of psychology can contribute to the further development of the discipline of psychology as a whole. This creation of connections is the basic idea of the biocentric approach on which the series is based. This approach promotes and aims to give space to various fundamental orientations in all cultural areas in all directions and allows them to be expressed in order to be described scientifically. The psychology of the 4 directions is described in this biocentric approach: the Islamic psychology is called the psychology of the „east", then the psychology of the „west", the „south" and the „north".This book series is open to welcome similar works, monographies and collective volumes. Scientific and technological development is changing our society fundamentally and the concept of risk is crucial for the analysis of the ongoing social transformation process. Progress in genetic engineering and the use of military technology by civilians, for instance, raise questions concerning ethical, political, environmental and public-health issues. This series, therefore, opts for a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of risk, which involves the scientific community as much as the political world and civil society. It publishes monographs and collected papers, mainly in French or English. Cette collection a pour principal objectif de traiter les différents aspects de la problématique des risques associés aux activités humaines. Parmi celles-ci, le développement scientifique, technologique et économique s’impose de plus en plus comme un moteur fondamental du changement social. Dans cette perspective, le concept de risque se révèle un outil pertinent d’analyse des processus de transformation sociale. À titre d’exemple, les recherches en génie génétique, de même que l’utilisation civile de technologie militaire, soulèvent inévitablement des questions d’éthique, de santé publique, d’environnement et de gestion des politiques publiques. Peter Lang Publishing’s Lifespan Communication: Children, Families and Aging book series seeks to publish authored and edited scholarly volumes that focus on relational and group communication as they develop over the lifespan (infancy through later life).
