Gender and Sexualities in Education

Part of the Peter Lang Diversity series, the Gender and Sexualities in Education series seeks to publish high quality manuscripts that address the complex interrelationship between gender and sexuality in shaping young people’s schooling experiences, their participation in popular youth cultures, and their sense of self in relation to others. Books published might include: a study of hip-hop youth culture, Latina/o students, white working class youth, or LGBTQQ community groups –– in each case asking how they explore, challenge, and perform gender and sexualities as part of learning and «“becoming somebody».” Other books might address issues of masculinities, gender and embodiment, trans and genderqueer youth, sexuality education, or the construction of heteronormativity in schools. We invite contributions from authors of ethnographic and other qualitative studies, theoretical texts, as well as critical analyses of popular culture “«texts”» targeted at or produced by youth – including an analysis of popular music and fan culture, video and film, and gaming culture. While the focus of the series is on original research or theoretical monographs, exceptionally well-crafted proposals for thematically coherent edited volumes and textbooks will also be considered. Intersections in Communications and Culture

This series publishes a wide range of new critical scholarship, particularly works that seek to engage with and transcend the disciplinary isolationism and genre confinement that characterizes so much of contemporary research in communication studies and related fields. The Editors are particularly interested in manuscripts that address the broad intersections, movement, and hybrid trajectories that currently define the encounters between human groups in modern institutions and societies. Images of Elsewhere

Flying saucers first appeared in the late 1940s, in the aftermath of the Second World War. They immediately became the subject of fascination, and their mystery has persisted. They can be understood through three lenses, that of science and technology, popular culture and, at the human level, personal experience. In general, approaches to flying saucers concentrate either on military and space hardware, or on science fiction and film, or on religious and occult ways of thinking. This mini-series brings these different perspectives into conversation for the first time, tracing the appearances of UFOs and their development. It explores how machines and humans learn to think together, producing new objects in a world that is dominated by technology and yet continually escaping our control.

The aim of the collection is to bring to light dramatic texts that have not attracted much critical attention but display the most popular generic formulas of the time and introduce a wide array of suggestive topics. The series consists of modern spelling, fully annotated editions, complete with textual commentary, glosses, as well as historical, cultural and literary references. Each of the volumes includes a critical introduction which places the text in context, discussing aspects such as authorship, the play’s response to the historical circumstances of the time, its use of theatrical conventions and stage history.

The series focuses primarily on subjects, works and authors of Victorian and Edwardian literature in light of an interpretation of the lines of epistemic continuities/discontinuities involved in the historical notion of “the long nineteenth-century” (1789–1914). While promoting new critical perspectives in the field of Victorian textual production (from literature to visual arts, from scientific works to popular press), the series also aims to publish interdisciplinary works which consider the ideological and sociocultural implications of the radical transformation in Victorian society. The publications in the series originate mainly from research work conducted at the CUSVE (Centre for Victorian and Edwardian Studies – University of Pescara, Italy) but the series is open to contributions originating outside the CUSVE. It publishes monographs, collections of essays, conference proceedings and doctoral dissertations. The language of publications is both English and Italian.

This series seeks to contribute to the current vibrant multidisciplinary academic debate regarding folklore and ethnology. The definition of both folklore and ethnology is a constant challenge, and the history of the development of the disciplines differs from one country to another. Folklore is at once dynamic process, shared communication and performance, and ethnology embraces context and folklife. So while these research areas continue to experience dramatic transformation, in terms of methodology, theoretical approaches as well as practical engagement with people and cultures, this series focuses on the evolving study of traditional and popular cultures, in all contexts and across all geographies of time and space. As folklore and ethnology reach across boundaries and become manifest in (new) cultural contexts through the enabling power of global communications and re-imaginings, this series therefore provides an international forum for continuing debate. Through a mixture of edited collections and single-author monographs, this series aims to re-evaluate contemporary critical thought as well as exploring new directions and theories, thus making a significant contribution to these disciplines which are fundamental to our understanding of contemporary culture and identity.

Ibero-American Screens / Pantallas Iberoamericanas

This series approaches the Ibero-American audiovisual field—cinema and television—from an interdisciplinary perspective, with special emphasis on studies stemming from Media Studies and Cultural Studies. We are especially interested in those volumes that examine audiovisual production in the Iberian Peninsula and/or Latin America from a comparative perspective. In addition, the collection will include studies on the production, distribution and circulation of audiovisual artifacts in the digital era. Consequently, we include works that explore the relationship between audiovisual media and other fields of popular culture, such as music and sports. We accept both theoretical proposals on audiovisual media and historical approaches that scrutinize a specific period of cinema or television in one or several geopolitical spaces. The series includes volumes on industrials aspects and political economy and reflections on key aspects for the articulation of both national and transnational imaginaries, such as memory and representational templates. The featured volumes can be monographs or collections of essays by different authors, in Spanish or English. Esta colección se acerca al ámbito audiovisual iberoamericano—cine y televisión— desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar, con especial énfasis en estudios provenientes de la Comunicación y los Estudios Culturales. Son de especial interés aquellos volúmenes que examinen la producción audiovisual de la Península Ibérica y/o Latinoamérica desde una perspectiva comparativa. Además, son especialmente relevantes aquellos estudios que aborden las transformaciones en la producción, distribución y circulación de los artefactos audiovisuales en la era digital. The "Visual Arts and Hispanic Societies" series is devoted to monographic or collective works in Spanish on artistic representations of the cultures of Hispanic countries, in Spain and in the Americas as well as territories or communities on other continents. The concept of ʻvisual artsʼ includes all forms of representation related to the image, whether they refer to academic arts such as photography, painting, theatre and film, or to more recent, popular and/or heterogeneous styles such as graphic novels, television, video games, street art, installations, interventions and other forms of free or ephemeral art, whether or not linked to new technologies. This collection aims to bring together authors writing from different perspectives who are interested in the social function of current or traditional art, in the way in which visual representations seek to convey critical, pragmatic, committed and/or political points of view on the conflicts through which Hispanic societies evolved in the past or are currently being transformed. La colección "Artes visuales y sociedades hispánicas" está dedicada a trabajos monográficos o colectivos en español sobre representaciones artísticas de las culturas de los países hispánicos, tanto en España y América como en algunos territorios o comunidades de otros continentes.
