Reflections on Signs and Language

This book series proposes themes that are generally associated with the so-called language and sign sciences, in the first place semiotics, linguistics and philosophy of language, inclusive of literary language. It also focuses on problems that interest the communication sciences, including mass-medial communication and the question of translation. However, the perspective is not limited to any one of these disciplinary spheres. Moreover, the series intends to propose a vision that is critical, open and dialogic, which means to say developed in terms of interdisciplinary dialogue. Such an approach is proficuous if it is not limited to encounter among specific disciplines, competencies and interests at a scientific level alone. In fact, a priority characterising this series is to create the conditions for encounter between the sciences of signs, language and communication, on the one hand, and the problems of everyday life which are closely involved, indeed are engendered in them, on the other. We live in a world where life overall as much as the life of each one of us depends increasingly on signs, language and communication. But there’s more: not only human life, but life in general, as biosemiotics now evidences unequivocally, consists of communication and is made of signs. We are looking forward to receiving contributions from all over the world, mindful of the series’ interdisciplinary orientation, characteristics and interests. Submissions should be written in English and will be peer-reviewed by the relevant specialists.

Studies in Communication, Culture, Race, and Religion examines how communication and cultural frameworks help shape our understanding of race and religion—and in turn, how foregrounding race and religion shapes our understanding of how we communicate and interpret culture. Grounded in communication methodology and theory, books in this series also contribute to our understanding of how communication helps shape culture and how culture shapes how we communicate. Using both historical and contemporary perspectives, studies in this series demonstrate how media and culture are intertwined with race and religion. Since these subjects are interdisciplinary, this peer-reviewed book series invites proposals for monographs and edited volumes from scholars across all academic disciplines using varied communication methodologies and theories. This series provides space for emerging, junior, and senior scholars engaged in research that studies the intersection of communication, culture, race, and religion to publish exciting and groundbreaking work.

La collana avvia una riflessione sui rapporti tra letteratura e altri saperi, osservando il modo in cui il testo letterario si arricchisce di temi, lessico, stili, forme, retorica propri di altri ambiti scientifici. Obiettivo della collana è indagare la rete di relazioni che la ricerca letteraria intrattiene con i linguaggi artistici (dal cinema al teatro, alla musica, alle arti figurative, alla serialità televisiva), con le discipline scientifiche (dalla biologia all’ecologia, dalle neuroscienze alla matematica), con la medicina, (dalla medicina narrativa alle Medical Humanities), con le scienze sociali, con il diritto, con l’economia e con le tecnologie. L’originalità della ricerca che si propone consiste nell’ambizione di rispecchiare l’intreccio tra ambiti apparentemente diversi, indagando il modo in cui le conoscenze letterarie influiscono sulle altre e viceversa, nel tentativo di correggere ogni rigida chiusura in specialismi contrapposti e cogliere l’evoluzione storica ed epistemica attraverso forme di dialogo e/o di scontro. La collana ospiterà opere dedicate al tema delle intersezioni tra discipline, mantenendo la letteratura sempre al centro degli equilibri. La prospettiva dovrà essere preferibilmente letteraria, con un’attenzione privilegiata alla letteratura italiana.

Global Intersectionality of Education, Sports, Race, and Gender

This series responds to the interesting dialogue and unique social phenomena in the global context produced by the intersections of race, sport, gender, and culture. Global Intersectionality explores these intersections and expands the literature on how each inform our thinking around certain dominant ideologies. This series examines how sporting practices in the U.S. are becoming the global norm in defining what is sport, thus our understanding of race, gender, and culture. The purpose is to inform sport enthusiasts, college students— undergraduate or graduate— educators, researchers, policy makers, and other stakeholders—who are social justice oriented— about the role sport has in contributing to informing cultural ideology, reproducing and reinforcing race and gender ideologies. It also seeks to foster an understanding of how this social phenomenon, that is often situated as merely entertainment or a recreational activity for leisure, has shifted into a cultural practice that can engender global socio-political relations. The topics will include critical moments in sport, as well as broader social movements in sporting context. In addition, this series will dis- cuss topics ranging from youth to professional sporting experiences with attention given to the socialization and educational processes inherent in these experiences as it relates to race, gender, and culture—one title might explore the global sporting practices of Black women, another book topic will examine the sporting practices and the academic and athletic excellence achieved at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Or, for example, another topic might be examining the athletic migration patterns of African athletes to Europe and the U.S. The uniqueness of the titles in this series is that they will employ a variety of methodologies, including, but not limited to, qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods methodological approaches, non- empirical and socio-historical approaches that incorporate primary and secondary data sources.

This series will focus on the construction of ‘mixed race’ or creole identities within the Asia-Pacific region. There has been considerable discussion of ‘mixed race’ within European and American contexts (mestiza, hapa, metis, beur, etc) but comparatively little has been said about the many ‘biracial’ and 'multiracial’ populations within the Asia-Pacific. Economic globalisation demands that people cross national borders with increasing frequency. This means that new ‘mixed race’ identities are a prominent feature of the contemporary world. The series examines this contemporary importance from a variety of disciplinary perspectives as well as considering the ways that ‘mixed race’ categories were in the past constructed out of the colonial encounter. Race and Resistance Across Borders in the Long Twentieth Century

This series focuses on the history and culture of activists, artists and intellectuals who have worked within and against racially oppressive hierarchies in the twentieth century and beyond, and who have then sought to define and to achieve full equality once those formal hierarchies have been overturned. It explores the ways in which such individuals - writers, scholars, campaigners and organizers, ministers, and artists and performers of all kinds - locate their resistance within a global context and forge connections with each other across national, linguistic, regional and imperial borders. Disseminating the latest interdisciplinary scholarship on the history, literature and culture of anti-racist movements in Africa, the Caribbean, the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America, the series foregrounds, through a cross-disciplinary approach, the transnational and intercultural nature of these resistance movements. The series embraces a range of themes, including but not limited to antislavery, intellectual and literary networks, emigration and immigration, anti-imperialism, church-based and religious movements, civil rights, citizenship and identity, Black Power, resistance strategies, women's movements, cultural transfer, white supremacy and anti-immigration, hip hop and global justice movements. The series is affiliated with the Race and Resistance Research Programme at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH), University of Oxford. Proposals are invited for sole- and joint-authored monographs as well as edited collections. We welcome projects in a wide range of fields, including but not restricted to history, political science, anthropology, literature, cultural studies and media studies. Studies on Themes and Motifs in Literature

The series is designed to advance the publication of research pertaining to themes and motifs in literature. The studies cover cross-cultural patterns as well as the entire range of national literatures. They trace the development and use of themes and motifs over extended periods, elucidate the significance of specific themes or motifs for the formation of period styles, and analyze the unique structural function of themes and motifs. By examining themes or motifs in the work of an author or period, the studies point to the impulses authors received from literary tradition, the choices made, and the creative transformation of the cultural heritage. The series will include publications of colloquia and theoretical studies that contribute to a greater understanding of literature.

The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology

“The Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology” is a peer-reviewed annual. It includes contributions about the history of phenomenology because phenomenology has its own specific development anchored in the texts of Edmund Husserl, his predecessors and followers, its distinctive themes and problems set within the frame of the philosophical and scientific discussions of their period. The yearbook is open to inquiries about the interpretation of phenomenology and to different approaches towards understanding phenomenological research, its systematic and methodological insights and its possible contributions to contemporary discussions both about pure philosophy and within the context of more interdisciplinary research. It is also open to broader discussions with other philosophical schools of thought. Volume 5 terminates the series.
