The contemporary nation-state is undergoing a series of transformations which question its traditional role as a container of social, political and economic systems. New spaces are emerging with the rise of regional production systems, movements for territorial autonomy and the rediscovery of old and the invention of new identities. States have responded by restructuring their systems of territorial government, often setting up an intermediate or regional level. There is no single model, but a range, from administrative deconcentration to federalization. Some states have regionalized in a uniform manner, while others have adopted asymmetrical solutions. In many cases, regions have gone beyond the nation-state, seeking to become actors in broader continental and transnational systems. The series covers the gamut of issues involved in this territorial restructuring, including the rise of regional production systems, political regionalism, questions of identity, and constitutional change. It will include the emergence of new systems of territorial regulation and collective action within civil society as well as the state. There is no a priori definition of what constitutes a region, since these span a range of spatial scales, from metropolitan regions to large federated states, and from administrative units to cultural regions and stateless nations. Disciplines covered include history, sociology, social and political geography, political science and law. Interdisciplinary approaches are particularly welcome. In addition to empirical and comparative studies, books focus on the theory of regionalism and federalism, including normative questions about democracy and accountability in complex systems of government. L’État-nation contemporain a subi une série de transformations qui remettent en cause son rôle traditionnel de cadre pour les systèmes sociaux, politiques et économiques. Des nouveaux espaces ont émergé avec la mise en place de systèmes de production régionaux, le développement des mouvements pour l’autonomie territoriale et la redécouverte des anciennes identités aussi bien que l’invention de nouvelles. Les États ont répondu à ces mutations par la restructuration de leurs systèmes de gouvernement territoriaux, le plus souvent par l’instauration d’un niveau intermédiaire ou régional. Il n’y a pas de modèle unique mais bien une gamme allant de la décentralisation administrative à la fédéralisation. Certains États se sont régionalisés de manière uniforme, tandis que d’autres ont adopté des solutions asymétriques. Dans plusieurs cas, les régions ont dépassé le cadre des États-nations, cherchant à devenir des acteurs au sein des systèmes continentaux et transnationaux. La collection s’intéresse à toute étude concernant cette restructuration territoriale, incluant le développement des systèmes de production régionaux, le régionalisme politique, les questions d’identité et les changements constitutionnels. Elle prend également en compte l’émergence de nouveaux systèmes de régulation territoriale et l’action collective au niveau de la société civile aussi bien que de l’État. Il n’y a pas de définition a priori de ce qui constitue une région, celle-ci pouvant embrasser un éventail de niveaux territoriaux, des régions métropolitaines aux grands États fédérés et des unités administratives aux régions culturelles et aux nations-sans-État. La collection comprend des études dans des disciplines variées telles que l’histoire, la sociologie, la géographie sociale et politique, la science politique et le droit. Les approches interdisciplinaires sont particulièrement bienvenues. Er ist in der Tat das wichtigste Phänomen, in dem sich die Dynamik des Wirtschaftens äußert und das dem Wachstum der Wirtschaft zugrunde liegt. Auch Wirtschaftspolitik ist seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten weit eher "Strukturpolitik" (im weitesten Sinne, also institutionelle Strukturen eingeschlossen) als "Globalsteuerung". Statisch-statistisch gesehen haben Struktur und Strukturwandel mit ökonomischen Phänomenen auf "mittlerer" Aggregationsebene und ihrem Wandel zu tun: Sektoren, Branchen, sektorale Cluster und Netzwerke, ferner Regionen, regionale Cluster und Netzwerke sowie schließlich Betriebsgrößenklassen (wie z. B der "Mittelstand" oder Kleinstunternehmen und Existenzgründer). Diese strukturelle Dimension der Wirtschaft beschreibt zugleich das moderne Feld der Meso-Ökonomik. Zur Strukturpolitik zählen dementsprechend die sektorale Strukturpolitik (industrial policy), die heutzutage auch cluster- und netzwerkorientiert ist, einschließlich der Technologiepolitik, die regionale Strukturpolitik, einschließlich der Humankapitalförderung i. w. S., sowie die Mittelstands- und Existenzgründungsförderpolitik. Insgesamt soll mit dieser Reihe der Anspruch verfolgt werden, eine moderne, interaktive Meso-Ökonomik zu repräsentieren. Diese kann die vielfältigen Insuffizienzen reiner Mikro- und reiner Makro-Ökonomik und die vielfältigen, oft unbeabsichtigten (wenngleich oft systematischen) strukturellen Effekte von mikro- und makroökonomischen Vorgängen und mikro- und makropolitischen Aktionen aufdecken helfen und schließlich die Probleme durch adäquate privat-private und privat-öffentliche Interaktionsstrukturen einer Lösung näherbringen. Studies in European Integration, State and Society

European integration is a profound phenomenon influencing our current understanding of political and social processes in Europe and beyond. The set of European institutions that have now functioned in the continent for over half a century have created new broadened frames of reference for a variety of social actors. The most comprehensive is the European Union, which can be characterised as a multilevel polity. The other organisations, such as the Council of Europe and OSCE, also contribute significantly to the new mode of relations in Europe. This has in turn influenced how social and political actors act and define their roles. European integration has changed the functioning of states, their sovereignty and the meaning and status of borders, as well as the nature of citizenship. It has also allowed social actors to be engaged in the increasingly transnationalised public sphere and therefore changed the analysis of the concept of civil society. In addition, it profoundly impacts the life of individuals, permitting spatial and social mobility along with reconstruction of collective identity and memory. This series welcomes book proposals that look at the political and social aspects of human activities in the broadest terms but analysed from the perspective of how these processes are transformed as a result of European integration. The series is open to work emerging from research cooperation between Polish and foreign scholars. Authors are welcome to submit manuscripts of monographs, collected volumes, and post-conference volumes. Outstanding dissertations will also be considered for publication.

The series “Societies and States in Transformation” offers an interdisciplinary forum for investigations of radical changes in world history with their concomitant social, political, cultural, and economic upheavals. Focus is thus laid on people and societies, both as actors and agencies in processes of transformation and as objects of such changes. These issues are addressed not only in the context of the intense ideological, institutional, and sociological shifts of the 20th Century, but also from deeper historical perspectives, and with a concern for processes currently emerging on the global horizon. The series thus deals with the various forms of expression in time and space that reflect the reactions to the challenges posed by epochal change brought about by the affected societies and nations. It includes works from historical and political science, sociology, socio-cultural anthropology, and cultural studies with the aim of facilitating interdisciplinary communication and interaction. Volume 25 concludes the serie. «Regional Integration and Social Cohesion» (RISC) is an interdisciplinary and multilingual (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese) series that examines the human and environmental impacts of regional integration, defined legally/politically (supranationalism), economically (globalization), socially (identity), and geographically (borders). The series aims to link global analysis of issues associated with social cohesion, such as market shifts, immigration, environmental risk and the deterioration of natural resources, human rights, violence and security, etc., with national and subnational studies that focus on political decision-making, the non-governmental sector and social participation in public debates, economic transformations, social marginalization, identity, etc. Thus, the series aims to combine the international, national and subnational arenas of politics in thematically-oriented research. While proposed case studies are welcome, the works presented in this series from all social science disciplines, are predominantly based on the comparative method. Studies that compare across geographic regions, defined continentally, are of particular interest. In addition to the scientific focus described above, this series aims to connect theoretical analysis of questions related to social cohesion with policy-based research. In doing so, it examines the role of political actors at different levels of regional integration processes and it studies citizen responses to changing opportunity structures in the economic, social and political spheres. Thus, the series attempts to shed light on contemporary shifts in the uses and types of power in policy-making processes. The issue of changes in how policies are being made is linked to: «who affects policy-making?» and «what impact do policies have in social and economic arenas?» « Intégration régionale et cohésion sociale » (RISC) est une collection interdisciplinaire et multilingue qui étudie les impacts humains et environnementaux qu’exerce l’intégration régionale, telle que définie légalement/politiquement (supranationalisme), économiquement (mondialisation), socialement (identité) et géographiquement (frontières). La collection cherche à mettre en relation d’une part l’analyse globale de problématiques associées à la cohésion sociale – les mouvements des marchés économiques, l’immigration, les enjeux écologiques, la préservation des ressources naturelles, les droits de l’homme, la violence et la sécurité, etc. – et d’autre part les études nationales et régionales/locales qui se centrent sur la prise de décision politique, le secteur non gouvernemental, la participation dans les débats publics, les transformations économiques, la marginalisation sociale, l’identité, etc. La collection cherche dès lors à combiner international, national et régional/local dans une perspective thématique. Si les études de cas y sont les bienvenues, on tentera cependant de privilégier les analyses comparatistes, dans le champ des sciences humaines, toutes disciplines confondues. Une attention toute particulière sera accordée aux études établissant des comparaisons entre continents. En outre, la collection souhaite relier l’analyse théorique de questions liées à la cohésion sociale à une recherche de type politique. Elle examine ainsi le rôle des acteurs politiques aux différents niveaux de l’intégration régionale et elle étudie la réaction des citoyens face aux mutations des structures économiques, sociales et politiques. RISC met dès lors en lumière les tendances contemporaines des usages et des types de pouvoir à l’œuvre dans les processus de prise de décision. La question de savoir comment les politiques sont élaborées est liée aux questions suivantes : « Qui peut influencer les politiques ? » et « quel est l’impact des politiques sur la scène politique et économique ? ».

This series seeks to call attention to itself by meeting high standards of scholarship and producing work of unquestionable merit. Works in this series should contribute to the re-integration of philosophy with the natural and social sciences, technology, the arts or humanities by challenging philosophical preconceptions that block the re-integration of philosophy with other disciplines.
