Cultural Interactions: Studies in the Relationship between the Arts

Interdisciplinary activity is now a major feature of academic work in all fields. The traditional borders between the arts have been eroded to reveal new connections and create new links between art forms. Cultural Interactions is intended to provide a forum for this activity. It will publish monographs, edited collections and volumes of primary material on points of crossover such as those between literature and the visual arts or photography and fiction, music and theatre, sculpture and historiography. It will engage with book illustration, the manipulation of typography as an art form, or the ‘double work’ of poetry and painting and will offer the opportunity to broaden the field into wider and less charted areas. It will deal with modes of representation that cross the physiological boundaries of sight, hearing and touch and examine the placing of these modes within their representative cultures. It will offer an opportunity to publish on the crosscurrents of nationality and the transformations brought about by foreign art forms impinging upon others. The interface between the arts knows no boundaries of time or geography, history or theory.

Images of Elsewhere

Flying saucers first appeared in the late 1940s, in the aftermath of the Second World War. They immediately became the subject of fascination, and their mystery has persisted. They can be understood through three lenses, that of science and technology, popular culture and, at the human level, personal experience. In general, approaches to flying saucers concentrate either on military and space hardware, or on science fiction and film, or on religious and occult ways of thinking. This mini-series brings these different perspectives into conversation for the first time, tracing the appearances of UFOs and their development. It explores how machines and humans learn to think together, producing new objects in a world that is dominated by technology and yet continually escaping our control.

Middle and Early Modern English Texts

This series is conceived to facilitate the edition of unpublished scientific treatises written in Late Middle English (late 13th century to the very early 16th century) as well as the publication of monographs dealing with their transmission, palaeographical and dialectal features, and/or their lexical, syntactic and pragmatic characteristics. The second aspect of the series seeks to favour studies specializing in linguistic variation or any of the multi-faceted aspects of the Middle English language even from a diachronic perspective. The Late Middle English Texts series is directed towards a wide scholarly readership that includes Textual Edition, Textual Criticism and Transmission – especially on electronic and digital formats both as standalone and online –, Ecdotics, History of Science, History of the English Language and Linguistics, Late Medieval Studies, History of Cultural Artifacts and Librarianship. The chronological scope we contemplate will range approximately from the mid 1200's to the early 1500's, and will include both manuscripts, incunabula and early prints that have come down to us in English, with the occasional excursion into analogues in other languages. Editions will include codicological and language studies that will enhance the relevance of the text within the cultural transmission European framework. The series includes both scholarly and academic editions and monograph studies with a specialised and comprehensive focus. Thematic and teaching textual anthologies will also be considered for the series. We do not aim primarily at publishing collected papers from conferences, symposia, meetings and other scholarly reunions, unless the occasion had a very relevant topic and was strongly coherent and specialised in its discussions. Each publication is subject to a rigorous blind double peer-review system that involves at least five readers from five different institutions (Universities or Research Institutes).

This series presents innovative research work in the dramaturgies of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Its main purpose is to re-assess the complex relationship between textual studies, cultural and/or performance aspects at the dawn of this new multicultural millennium. The series offers discussions of the link between drama and multiculturalism (studies of “minority” playwrights –– ethnic, Aboriginal, gay, and lesbian), reconsiderations of established playwrights in the light of contemporary critical theories, studies of the interface between theatre practice and textual analysis, studies of marginalized theatrical practices (circus, vaudeville, etc.), explorations of emerging postcolonial drama, research into new modes of dramatic expressions and comparative or theoretical drama studies. Cette série présente des travaux de recherche innovateurs dans le domaine de la dramaturgie des XXe et XXIe siècles. Son objectif essentiel est de ré-examiner la relation complexe entre études de textes, aspects culturels et/ou performatifs à l’aube d’un millénaire multiculturel. La collection offre des analyses du lien entre textes dramatiques et multiculturalisme (études de dramaturges issus de « minorités » diverses, ethniques, aborigènes et sexuelles), de nouvelles approches de dramaturges confirmés à la lumière des théories critiques contemporaines, des études de l’interface entre pratique théâtrale et analyse textuelle, des études de formes théâtrales marginales (cirque, vaudeville, etc.), des monographies relatives au théâtre postcolonial ainsi qu’aux nouveaux modes d’expression dramatique. Die Reihe Wissen - Kompetenz - Text bietet Publikationen ein Forum, die sich aus fachwissenschaftlicher oder fachdidaktischer Perspektive mit Fragen der Sprach- und Textkompetenz sowie prinzipiell mit dem Zusammenhang von Wissen und Text beschäftigen. Von besonderem Interesse sind Publikationen, die anwendungsbezogene Perspektiven einnehmen und damit Facetten der Wissenskommunikation unter dem Blickwinkel der beruflichen Relevanz, der kommunikativen Kompetenz, der Textproduktion und -rezeption sowie den Bedingungen von Mehrsprachigkeit beleuchten. Die Reihe hat einen sprachwissenschaftlichen bzw. sprachdidaktischen Schwerpunkt, ist jedoch auch offen für literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge oder Arbeiten aus anderen Disziplinen.
