This series of monographs is concerned with drama and allied entertainment in a wide variety of kinds in the theatre and on film, television and video screens. The emphasis is on the history and interpretation of dramatic entertainment, performance and production in regular and musical theatre, including music hall and variety stages, in para-theatrical activities, like fairground performance and festivals, and in the silent and sound cinema and on television and video. The series engages particularly with the social, political and economic contexts of drama on past and present stages and screens, considering the work of dramatists, performers, directors, designers, technicians and administrators, and will aim to be very wide-ranging in scope, its subjects spanning Classical, Medieval and Renaissance European drama and theatre, Eastern theatre forms, and international modern drama in its various performance kinds. Within this broad remit, the series hopes to publish historical, critical and theoretical studies, annotated anthologies of critical, theoretical and dramatic texts, and collections of interviews and screenplays.

MIMOS – Schweizer Jahrbuch Darstellende Künste

The MIMOS series addresses professionals in the field of the performing arts and an interested general public. The richly illustrated volumes contain contributions from specialists and artists in German, French, Italian and English. Since 2021, the Swiss Performing Arts Yearbook MIMOS documented the work of the respective winners of the Swiss Grand Award for the Performing Arts / Hans Reinhart Ring. This award, the highest in Switzerland, honours outstanding artists in the field of performing arts. The award is provided by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC) in cooperation with the Swiss Association for Theatre Studies (SATS). Laureates may be individuals or institution from dance, theatre, cabaret, performance, contemporary circus, puppet theatre or street art. Until 2020, the series was called MIMOS – Swiss Theatre Yearbook. From 2011 to 2013, each MIMOS edition was dedicated to the artist who the SATS awarded with the Hans Reinhart Ring. From 2014 to 2020, the main focus of the MIMOS Theatre Yearbook was placed on the winner of the Swiss Grand Award for Theatre / Hans Reinhart Ring, awarded by the FOC in cooperation with the SATS. In 2017, a special MIMOS edition was published to mark the triple anniversary: 90 years of the SATS, 60 years of the Hans Reinhart Ring and 25 years of the Institute of Theatre Studies at the University of Bern. Réalisés par des expertes et artistes du domaine des arts de la scène et richement illustrés, les volumes de la collection MIMOS s’adressent autant aux professionnelles, qu’à un public plus large. Les contributions sont rédigées en allemand, français, italien ainsi qu’en anglais. Depuis 2021, chaque ouvrage de l’Annuaire suisse des arts de la scène MIMOS est consacré au parcours artistique de la personnalité honorée par l’Office fédéral de la culture (OFC), en coopération avec la Société suisse du théâtre (SST), du Grand Prix suisse des arts de la scène / Anneau Hans Reinhart. Il s’agit de la plus haute distinction suisse décernée une fois par an à une ou un artiste ou institution issues de la danse, du théâtre, du cabaret, de la performance, du cirque contemporain, du théâtre de marionnettes ou des arts de la rue. Entre 2011 et 2013, sous le nom de MIMOS – Annuaire suisse du théâtre, les ouvrages de la collection étaient entièrement consacrés à la lauréate ou au lauréat de l’Anneau Hans Reinhart, attribué par la SST. Après, entre 2014 et 2020, la SST s’est penchée dans le cadre de sa collection MIMOS sur la trajectoire de l’artiste que l’OFC et la SST ont honoré par le Grand Prix suisse de théâtre / Anneau Hans Reinhart. Seit 2021 dokumentiert das Schweizer Jahrbuch Darstellende Künste MIMOS das Wirken der Trägerin bzw. des Trägers des Schweizer Grand Prix Darstellende Künste / Hans-Reinhart-Rings. Mit dieser höchsten Auszeichnung im Bereich der darstellenden Künste ehrt das Bundesamt für Kultur (BAK) in Kooperation mit der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Theaterkultur (SGTK) jedes Jahr eine herausragende Persönlichkeit oder Institution aus Tanz, Theater, Kleinkunst, Performance, zeitgenössischer Zirkus, Figurentheater oder Strassenkunst. The Old Greek verb theaomai – looking both with the mind’s eye and the actual eye - since the very beginning of European theatre suggests a close relation between theatre and theory. Within the act of perception the spectators, theates, relate the things they hear and see to the site of their memory and psyche. Of all the arts those who reflect the process of perception in the aesthetic form itself are performative arts. This series publishes interdisciplinary studies between theatre- and media studies as well as studies on the visual arts that analyse the social and subjective potential of the aesthetic process of looking, hearing, and reading. Das altgriechische Verb theaomai –„mit dem geistigen wie konkreten Auge schauen“? legt seit den Anfängen des europäischen Theaters eine enge Beziehung von Theater und Theorie nahe. Diese wird vom Zuschauer theates über den Akt seiner Wahrnehmung geknüpft: er verbindet konkretes Hören und Sehen mit dem Schauplatz seines Gedächtnisses und seiner Psyche. Künste, die diesen Prozess des Wahrnehmens in der ästhetischen Form selbst reflektieren, somit Denken und sinnliche Teilnahme des Rezipienten fordern, um die Sinnpotentialitäten des ästhetischen Gegenstands zu realisieren, sind performative Künste. This series presents innovative research work in the dramaturgies of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Its main purpose is to re-assess the complex relationship between textual studies, cultural and/or performance aspects at the dawn of this new multicultural millennium. The series offers discussions of the link between drama and multiculturalism (studies of “minority” playwrights –– ethnic, Aboriginal, gay, and lesbian), reconsiderations of established playwrights in the light of contemporary critical theories, studies of the interface between theatre practice and textual analysis, studies of marginalized theatrical practices (circus, vaudeville, etc.), explorations of emerging postcolonial drama, research into new modes of dramatic expressions and comparative or theoretical drama studies. Son objectif essentiel est de ré-examiner la relation complexe entre études de textes, aspects culturels et/ou performatifs à l’aube d’un millénaire multiculturel. British and Irish Studies in German Language and Literature Edited by H. S. Reiss and W. E. Yates This long-established series aims to publish works of serious scholarship drawn from the whole subject range of traditional Germanistik, originating both in Great Britain and in the Republic of Ireland, and readably written. Over fifty volumes have b een published since 1974. They include new books both by distinguished senior scholars and by younger researchers, collected essays either by single authors or by several hands (these have included papers emerging from conferences, often in both Eng lish and German) and selected doctoral dissertations reworked in book form. The weight of the series has mainly fallen on literature, theatre and cultural history from the eighteenth century onwards, in some cases with a strong comparative dimension.

Internationalism and the Arts explores the multiple ways in which the arts have operated internationally, responded to internationalist ideology, and helped shape thinking about world organization. The series challenges the emphasis on nationalism and national schools that has developed over the past 250 years. Instead, it draws attention to internationalist art and ideology; the lives and work of cosmopolitan artists and theorists; international networks, systems and practices; and societies that promote international exchange. The series speaks to the rise of transnationalism as a major approach across a number of research fields. Within this literature, it addresses a relative dearth of publications which focus on international art practice as a crucial element of human experience. Proposals are invited across the performing and visual arts, including art history, music, dance and theatre. Our geographical scope is global and we welcome projects that look beyond the Western world or that examine cross-cultural exchanges. We are open to proposals for monographs and edited collections, anthologies of primary sources and textbooks, and scholarly catalogues that showcase visual material. All proposals and manuscripts will be subject to peer review.

Cultural Interactions: Studies in the Relationship between the Arts

Interdisciplinary activity is now a major feature of academic work in all fields. The traditional borders between the arts have been eroded to reveal new connections and create new links between art forms. Cultural Interactions is intended to provide a forum for this activity. It will publish monographs, edited collections and volumes of primary material on points of crossover such as those between literature and the visual arts or photography and fiction, music and theatre, sculpture and historiography. It will engage with book illustration, the manipulation of typography as an art form, or the ‘double work’ of poetry and painting and will offer the opportunity to broaden the field into wider and less charted areas. It will deal with modes of representation that cross the physiological boundaries of sight, hearing and touch and examine the placing of these modes within their representative cultures. It will offer an opportunity to publish on the crosscurrents of nationality and the transformations brought about by foreign art forms impinging upon others. The interface between the arts knows no boundaries of time or geography, history or theory.

Studies in Modern German and Austrian Literature is a broadly conceived series that aims to publish significant research and scholarship devoted to German and Austrian literature of all forms and genres from the eighteenth century to the present day. The series promotes the analysis of intersections of literature with thought, society and other art forms, such as film, theatre, autobiography, music, painting, sculpture and performance art. It includes monographs on single authors or works, focused historical periods, and studies of experimentation with form and genre. Wider ranging explorations of literary, cultural or socio-political phenomena in the German-speaking lands or among writers in exile and analyses of national, ethnic and cultural identities in literature are also welcome topics. Proposals are invited for monographs, high-quality doctoral dissertations revised for book publication, focused collections of essays (including selectively edited conference proceedings), annotated editions and bibliographies. Senior figures in the academic profession as well as early career or independent scholars are encouraged to submit proposals. All proposals and manuscripts will be peer reviewed. We publish in both German and English. This series is a successor to Studies in Modern German Literature, edited by Peter D.G. Brown.

The work of Marguerite Duras has become one of the most popular subjects of academic research, achieving enormous global reach. Her work crosses many genres (novels, theatre, films, journalism, interviews, short texts), and she attracted the interest of important contemporary thinkers such as Lacan, Foucault and Blanchot. As well as having a unique style and the power to fascinate, Duras was politically active and became an important witness of her time. These are the reasons why she is considered to be one of the most significant writers of the 20th century. This series aims to give academics and the large number of Duras fans the chance to explore a wide range of high-quality research generated by her work. This is made possible with the publication of monographs, collections of essays, conference notes and texts from doctoral research. The series encourages cross-disciplinary views and aims to be a major platform for dialogue on the different approaches to research on Marguerite Duras. La recherche scientifique autour de l’œuvre de Marguerite Duras est l’une des plus actives et l’une des plus étendues de par le monde.
