Indigenous Cultures of Latin America

Indigenous Cultures of Latin America: Past and Present is a new bilingual series that welcomes book proposals, in English or Spanish, focused on the fields of anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, ethnohistory, and art history, among others. We encourage original proposals for projects that use a conjunctive approach to understanding beliefs and lifeways of prehispanic, colonial period, and contemporary indigenous peoples inhabiting Latin America, broadly defined (i.e. extending into parts of the U.S. Southeast and Southwest), relying on a combination of methodologies and data sets to interpret the subject matter. We further encourage projects that utilize decolonizing methodologies and seek to promote research and fieldwork undertaken in collaboration with local indigenous communities and/or indigenous consultants. The series will publish academic monographs, edited collections, and readers. All book proposals and manuscripts will be subject to a rigorous single-blind peer review process, conducted by experts in the respective field(s) of study. Im Wintersemester 2009/2010 wurde an der Universität Trier eine neue Forschungseinrichtung mit dem Namen America Romana Centrum (ARC) gegründet, die der auf Amerika zentrierten romanistischen Forschung und Lehre einen institutionellen Rahmen gibt. Ziel des ARC ist es, die Tradition der sprachenübergreifenden Romanistik, die für Europa so beeindruckende Resultate geliefert hat, auf Amerika anzuwenden: Das Französische in Kanada, der Karibik und in Südamerika (Guyana), das Spanische als Staatssprache von 19 Ländern zwischen dem Rio Grande und Feuerland sowie das Portugiesische in Brasilien sollen ebenso wie franko- und ibero-kreolische Varianten bzw. die nach Amerika verpflanzten Ausprägungen des Italienischen (und neuerdings des Rumänischen) im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit stehen. Die interdisziplinären Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Raum America Romana fokussieren gegenseitige Beeinflussungen, aber auch Abgrenzungen sowie Berührungen mit anderen Sprachen, Literaturen und Kulturen.

German Studies in America publishes research across the field of German studies in the broadest sense, from literary criticism to cultural studies. The editors welcome scholarly work that takes an innovative approach to German, Swiss, or Austrian history, literature, politics, philosophy, national identity, religion, popular culture, film, music, and/or visual art. We are also eager to consider projects that adopt interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches as well as studies with theoretical approaches including psychoanalysis, gender studies, feminism, Marxism, critical race studies, etc. We publish scholarly monographs, translations and edited volumes of essays in both German and English. This series adheres to the highest academic standards and is peer reviewed.

Typically, they are excellent monographs that have been subjected to a rigorous peer-review process. They tend to be written on topics that would not be suitable for our more specific series within each discipline. Many of the titles have won national and international awards. Iberian and Latin American Studies: The Arts, Literature, and Identity

This series publishes titles from any area of Iberian and Latin American Studies that explore issues relating to questions of identity. The series accepts for publication scholarly monographs and collections of essays that aim to further our knowledge and understanding of the lives of individuals and communities who speak any of the languages of the Iberian Peninsula or Latin America. Ideas and concepts of identity can be explored at various levels, ranging from the individual to the national or international, and in different media. Proposals are welcome from researchers working in any cultural field, for example, the history of ideas, literature, performance, cinema, art and photography, and on a variety of issues, including nationhood, exile, memory, and gender. The series welcomes manuscripts in English or Spanish.

The Neo-Latin literature is an important factor uniting Europe as a cultural entity. It is impossible to comprehend European culture as a coherent homogenous whole without an enquiry into this literature. European culture perceived as the sum of national literatures emerges to us as incomplete and distorted as a figure reflected in a broken mirror. The series œNeo-Latin Studies shall include books concerning all aspects of Neo-Latin writing. It is our intention to pay a special attention to Central European writing of the 16th, 17th, 18th centuries and more broadly the issues of the Northern Renaissance. Books “ both collections of studies by various authors (such as its forerunner Pietas Humanistica, 2006) and individual monographs “ will be published both in English and German. "This series deals with the relationship between literary creation and the social, political, and historical contexts in which it is produced. The types of volumes may include critical analyses of one or more works by one or several authors; critical editions of important works that may have been out of print for a long time, but which represent a major contribution to literature of the Iberian Peninsula or Latin America, English translations of important works, with critical introduction. Topics for Latin America include: studies of representative works of nineteenth- and twentieth-century thought, poetic portrayals of history, subgenres (fictionalization of the rural and urban social structures); historical novels; literature of exile; re-readings of colonial texts; new approaches to the figure of the Indian and other representatives of transculturation; women writers and other less studied authors. Topics for Spain and Portugal include: writing and nationalism in the Spanish State; bilingualism and the literary texts; censorship and exile; new and renewed genres such as autobiography and testimony; the formation of the avant-garde. Formal studies are expected to bear out the general contextual focus of the series. The use of recent developments in literary criticism is especially appropriate. The series also seeks to contribute to the understanding and accuracy of interpretation of the writing which has combined European elements with indigenous and African ones as well as to the understanding of the dynamics behind such major cultural issues as the formation of literary trends or subgenres, national identities, the effects of postcolonial status on literary imagination, the appearance and experience of women writers, and the relationships between post-modernism and Ibero-American writing. The series title is inclusive of literatures which are geographically, historically, or politically related and whose comparison is relevant to Spanish and Spanish American writing. This means those written in the other three languages of Spain, in Portugal, and Brazil. Comparative studies in which colonial or post colonial themes are prevalent may also be appropriate, if one of the literatures is in either Spanish or Portuguese. Violence often takes the form of a catastrophic eruption. However, it also inscribes itself in different ways in the everyday life of society. Literary texts and media discourse are capable of analysing the relations between macro and micro levels of violence as forms of symbolic action. In the process, the critique of violence does not simply address the question of the representation of violence; the question of the violence of representation needs to be pursued as well. The series Signatures of Violence brings together innovative, transdisciplinary approaches to these difficult questions in the field of literary and media studies. Gewalt tritt oft in Form katastrophischer Eruptionen auf. Aber sie schreibt sich auch auf vielfältige Art und Weise in den gesellschaftlichen Alltag ein. Literarische und mediale Texte sind in der Lage, die Beziehungen zwischen Makro- und Mikroebenen von Gewalterscheinungen als symbolische Handlungen zu analysieren. Dabei wirft die Kritik der Gewalt nicht nur die Frage der Darstellung der Gewalt auf; auch der Frage nach der Gewalt der Darstellung muss nachgegangen werden. Die Reihe Signaturen der Gewalt bietet literatur- und medienwissenschaftlichen Studien einen Raum, welche innovative, transdisziplinäre Zugänge zu diesen schwierigen Fragen öffnen.

International Relations in Asia, Africa and the Americas: Politics, Economy, Society – Transdisciplinary Perspectives publishes high quality studies of contemporary non-European problems, connected with politics, economics, social issues, cultural studies, as well as broadly understood international relations. Both theoretically driven and empirical research based publications are welcomed. Monographs and essay collections on the Asia-Pacific, African and American issues are invited, focusing especially on newest developments in those regions. Publications proposals are reviewed by series editors and after initial acceptance blind review procedure is initiated. Based on the results of this blind review process, given titles are published. Critical Studies of Latinxs in the Americas

The Latinx presence continues to grow and intersect with every aspect of life in the 21st century. This is evident when one considers the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor as Associate Justice to the United States Supreme Court. As well as the prominence of distinct Latinx individuals in various spheres of social, cultural, and political life such as Mario J. Molina, Nobel Prize winner and recipient of the Medal of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013; and Jorge Maria Bergoglio (Pope Francis) who has revolutionized the Catholic church since he became the highest ecclesiastical authority of the Catholic world in 2013. Latino Studies, as an academic field of inquiry, began to emerge during the early 1990s surfacing from the more recognized field of Chicano Studies. As such, the major contributions to the field first emerged from Mexican/Chicano scholarship—publications such as Aztlán, the most important journal in the field of Chicano Studies since 1970; Gloria Anzaldúa’’s groundbreaking memoir/essay, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987); George J. Sanchez’s historical account, Becoming Mexican American: Ethnicity, Culture, and Identity in Chicano Los Angeles, 1900-1945 (1995); and the two volumes of The Chicano Studies Reader: An Anthology of Aztlan, 1970-2010. These are a few examples of the consolidation and the continuing development of Chicano Studies in the United States. In the past two decades, Latino Studies have grown and expanded significantly. There have been a large number of publications about Latinxs in the Midwest and North East; in addition, due to the fast-growing population of Latinxs in the area, new scholarship has emerged about the Latinxs in the New South. Some examples of the emerging field of Latino Studies are the Latinos on the East Coast (2015) edited by Yolanda Medina and Ángeles Donoso Macaya, Global Cities and Immigrants (2015) by Francisco Velasco Caballero and María de los Angeles Torres; the Handbook of Latinos and Education (2010) edited by Enrique Murillo, et al.; Angela Anselmo’s and Alma Rubal-Lopez’s 2004 On Becoming Nuyoricans; David Carey Jr. and Robert Atkinson (2009) Latino Voices in New England; Yolanda Prieto’s case study entitled, The Cubans of Union City: Immigrants and Exiles in a New Jersey Community (2009); and Lawrence La Fontaine-Stokes’ Queer Ricans Cultures and Sexualities in the Diaspora (2009). Critical Studies of Latinxs in the Americas will become the counterpart of the aforementioned research about the Latinx diaspora that deserve equal scholarly attention and will add to the academic field of inquiry that highlights the lived experience, consequential progress and contributions, as well as the issues and concerns that all Latinxs face in present times. This provocative series will offer a critical space for reflection and questioning of what it means to be Latinx living in the Americas, extending the dialogue to include the North and South hemispheric relations that are prevalent in other fields of global studies such as Post-Colonial Theory, Post-Colonial Feminism, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Critical Race Theory, and others. This broader scope can contribute to prolific interdisciplinary research and can also promote changes in policies and practices that will enable today’s leaders to deal with the overall issues that affect us all. Topics that explore contemporary inequalities and social exclusions associated with processes of racialization, economic exploitation, health, education, transnationalism, immigration, identity politics, and abilities that are not commonly highlighted in the current literature as well as the multitude of socio-economic, and cultural commonalities and differences among the Latinxs in the Americas will be at the center of the series. As the Latinx population continues to grow and change, and universities enhance their Latino Studies programs to be inclusive of all types of Latinx identities, a series dedicated to the lived experience of Latinxs in the Americas and a consideration of their progress and concerns in the social, cultural, political, economic, and artistic arenas is of incredible value in the quest for pedagogical practices and understandings that apply a critical perspective to the issues facing scholars in this area of study. Scholars, faculties, and students alike will benefit from this series. Expressions of interest for authored or edited books will be considered on a first come basis. Although human beings have been migrating across the globe for millennia, mass migration to North America has occurred only in the last 200 years. Whether they came to farm the land, to practice their crafts, or to find work in newly-emerging industries, over 50 000 000 immigrants crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the last two centuries to begin a new life in the «New World». This series presents texts and studies on the history of the German language in North America, which spans more than 300 years. It invites scholars in all fields of German studies and colleagues from related academic disciplines (American studies, modern history, ethnology, migration research, etc.). The volumes published so far have been primarily concerned with issues of the German Language in 19th century North America. Keywords with regard to language history are “war diaries”, “emigrant letters”, “language regionality”, “German-English language interference”, “grammar”, “learning German for native speakers of English”, and so on. Die Reihe legt Textdokumente und Einzeluntersuchungen zur über dreihundertjährigen Geschichte der deutschen Sprache in Nordamerika vor. Sie ist für Germanisten wie auch für die Fachkollegenschaft aus benachbarten Disziplinen (Amerikanistik, Neuere Geschichte, Volkskunde, Migrationsforschung u. a.) konzipiert.
