How are media and communications transforming armed conflicts? How are conflicts made visible in the media in different national and transnational settings? How does the media serve as a means by which
various actors manage and communicate conflict?

These are some of the questions addressed in this book. Using a variety of disciplinary perspectives and analytical approaches, contributors discuss the complex, multi-level Ukraine conflict as it is imagined and enacted in and through various media. Covering a wide range of media forms and content, including television news, newspapers, PR campaigns, and social media content, they offer new, empirically grounded insight into the ways in which traditional mass media and new media forms are involved in narrating and shaping conflict.

This book is suitable for students of conflict and media courses in journalism, media and communication, politics, security, and Russian and Eastern European studies.

Rune Saugmann Andersen is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Tampere, Finland, doing interdisciplinary research on the visual mediation of security. His work has appeared in Security Dialogue, EJIR, Journalism Practice, European Journal of Communication and JOMEC Journal as well as numerous edited collections. His research is available at


Olga Baysha is an assistant professor of Communication at the National Research University, Higher School of Economics, Moscow, Russia. Her research is on international communication, with an emphasis on the post-Soviet media systems. She is especially interested in alternative media, broadly defined, as parts of global social movements for democratisation and social justice. She is the author of the book The Mythologies of Capitalism and the End of the Soviet Project (Lexington Books, 2014); her research has also appeared in European Journal of Cultural Studies, International Journal of Communication, International Journal of Cultural Studies and Journalism Studies.


Göran Bolin is professor in Media & Communication Studies, Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden. Bolin’s current research focuses on cultural production and consumption in contemporary media and culture industries, and how relationships between these are altered by digitisation and marketisation processes. His most recent work includes Value and the Media: Cultural ← 189 | 190 → Production and Consumption in Digital Markets (Ashgate, 2011), and the forthcoming Media Generations: Experience, Identity and Mediatised Social Change (Routledge, 2016).
