The continuous evolution of internet and related social media technologies and platforms have opened up vast new means for communication, socialization, expression, and collaboration. They also have provided new resources for researchers seeking to explore, observe, and measure human opinions, activities, and interactions. However, those using the internet and social media for research – and those tasked with facilitating and monitoring ethical research such as ethical review boards – are confronted with a continuously expanding set of ethical dilemmas. Internet Research Ethics for the Social Age: New Challenges, Cases, and Contexts directly engages with these discussions and debates, and stimulates new ways to think about – and work towards resolving – the novel ethical dilemmas we face as internet and social media-based research continues to evolve. Contributor Biographies


Elizabeth Buchanan is Endowed Chair in Ethics and Director of the Center for Applied Ethics at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Her research focuses on the intersection of research regulations and Internet research. She has written and presented widely for over fifteen years to many IRBs throughout the United States, and research ethics boards internationally.

Benjamin Burroughs is an Assistant Professor of Emerging Media in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). His research focuses on civic streaming, media industries, and social media.

Rebeca Cerezo-Menéndez is an associate professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Oviedo. Her main area of interest is metacognition and educational data mining.

Amaia Eskisabel-Azpiazu is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Oviedo; her line of research is at the crossroads of social media mining and the detection of mental health issues.

Charles Ess is a Professor in Media Studies in the Department of Media and Communication at the University of Oslo, and Director of the Center for Research in Media Innovation (CeRMI). His research and publications emphasize cross-cultural and ethical perspectives in Internet Studies, and Information and Computing Ethics. ← 307 | 308 →
