Extract
Democratic Decline, Deficit, Destabilization
The following chapters critically analyze public communication and the public sphere in contemporary democratic societies. The rise of fake news, disinformation, and the alleged emergence of post-truth society, aided by disruptive information and communication technologies such as data analytics, bots, and algorithms are examined and their impact on society explored. In addition, and importantly, this analysis looks beyond technology to examine human behaviour and practices that are creating what is referred to as post-communication, and identifies areas for change to reverse the corruption of the public sphere with disinformation, deception, and manipulation.
