Continuing the explorations begun in the first Produsing Theory volume, this book provides a site at which varied theories – some still emerging – can intersect and shine a light into the spaces between what previously had been neatly separated and discrete components of media systems. In some settings, division by audience, content, and production settings remains useful, but this volume, like the first, is all about the interstices.
Contributors reflect varied perspectives in their approaches to the spaces formed as a result of rapidly developing and swiftly deploying new communications technologies and social software. They shine multiple spotlights into the intersection of audiences and production, providing a guide toward a nuanced understanding of the interstitial spaces.

 C H A P T E R F O U R  Produsing the Hidden: Darknet Consummativities Jeremy Hunsinger onsummativity is a mode of the labor of consumption. It is both its measure and the system of needs driving consumption itself as constituted through and constituting the subject’s desires (Baudrillard, 1981; Dant, 1999). As a field of distributed subjectivity, consumption is one mode through which we coconstruct ourselves and our relation to things. Darknets are clearly participating in this field of consumption, as is the Internet in which darknets exist. Consummativity is the labor of the desires that coconstitutes the subject of the produser in relation to his or her consumption of the project (Bruns, 2006, 2008a, 2008b). In the case of darknets, that consumption is of time, knowledge, and economic value involved in produsing darknets. Consummativity is both the identification and alienation of the reflexive awareness of the subject’s desires/needs. On darknets, these desires/needs are coconstructed to run the gamut from the simplest curiosity to political organizing to representations of illicit activity to the activities themselves. The alienation and identification of desires function much like the creation of the identity of producer/user or produser: the quasiobject that is produced is always partly the produser’s alienated identity (Bruns, 2008a, 2008b; Gehl, 2014; Herman, 2013; Latour, 1993). This process produces the capacity to realize the values in the darknets, including the values found in the relation- ship to the material presented therein.
