Chapter Seven: From a Constellation to a Galaxy



Through this book we have toured the constellation of information for the massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft. This constellation of information includes knowledge compendiums like wikis with thousands of pages, YouTube channels with how-to-videos and videos of game play, forums, in-game resources, resources with specialized information about professions; and the list goes on. The book has also shown the complexity within the game which spawns this vast constellation of information: from choosing a character, to picking a specialization, to choosing which quests to do, and how to navigate the economy and to use the in-game auction house. The constellation of information is vast and offers so many opportunities to both find information and get lost in it. And, as we have seen in the previous chapters, information literacy practices are used as a compass in the space to help those who are looking for information to navigate the space.

From the information horizon maps we have seen how individual players see themselves connected to the resources they use and how those resources compare to the vast amount of information available. The information literacy practices demonstrated in this chapter show how the individuals make a map or constellation for themselves in order to navigate their way through the plethora of information available.
