The Revelations of Asher

Toward Supreme Love in Self – (This Is an Endarkened, Feminist, New Literacies Event)

Jeanine M. Staples

The Revelations of Asher: Toward Supreme Love in Self is an endarkened, feminist, new literacies event. It critically and creatively explores Black women’s terror in love. With poetry, prose, and analytic memos, Jeanine Staples shows how a group of Black women’s talk and writings about relationships revealed epistemological and ontological revelations, after 9/11. These revelations are presented in the context of a third wave new literacies framework. They are voiced and storied dynamically by the women’s seven fragmented selves. Through the selves, we learn the five ways the women lived as lovers: Main Chick, Side Chick, Bonnie, Bitch, and Victim. As an alternative-response to these identities in love, the author presents a new way. She introduces the Supreme Lover Identity and illuminates its integral connection to social and emotional justice for and through Black women’s wisdom.

Thinking and feeling my way through a family of terrors by invitation of fragmented selves (Jeanine speaks)

Thinking and feeling my way through a family of terrors by invitation of fragmented selves

The trajectory of t/Terror does not appear to be hierarchical, cyclical, or strictly procedural because its nature and function are not sensibly ranked, transferable, or predictable. There are common terrors (words, thoughts, and deeds that trigger our deepest, hidden fears of detachment, lack of control, abandonment, senses of inadequacy, rage, confusion, smallness), yet they land randomly and uniquely in the places of various souls. That is, manifestations of terrors are dependent upon the respective/receptive soul in which they reside. For example, an action (or inaction) that I perceive as a personal slight may fly over the head of another. A word that does not register to me as significant at all may prick another’s consciousness and press into a tenderness they have hidden away from the world. terrors are all over the place.

They are Every Day deaths and Some Day deaths126 and resist easy category. However, many of them can be captured for organization’s sake. To help us get a look at them and move toward cure I have organized fragmented selves, the words and subsequent meanings they contribute to the place of the soul, and the knowledge they produce, into two tables. I have done this because, as Rajah once said, “We are ever learning and actually do come to the knowledge of truth…we arrive ← 483 | 484 → at revelations to proceed toward meaningful care,127 not cure, correction,...
