We would like to thank all involved persons for making this book possible, which is based on a conference held in Zurich in October 2014. After a long time this was once again an international conference focusing on the history of Vocational Education and Training (VET). Understanding todays’ VET systems requires a comprehension of the rise and development, i.e. of the foundations of topical VET. This book is one of the first publications providing a comparative view of this development in Europe. Apart from older roots, the evolution of VET systems are one trigger of the modernization of economy, society and education itself.

Besides the many contributors to the conference, not all of whom worked out papers for this publication, we also invited a few people to add some chapters. Many thanks to all those who managed to deliver interesting and inspiring contributions to this book.

Special thanks to all those whose valuable support made the conference and the book feasible: Jennifer Keller, Karin Büchel, Lea Zehnder and Fabienne Threadgill.

For the careful reading of all papers and for translating the introduction and one paper we would also like to express our special thanks to Mirko Wittwar.
