This book offers a critical review of three different approaches to Editorial Discourse Analysis (EDA). In a practical approach, each of the three – linguistic, discoursal and dialogistic – is applied to the analysis of China Daily editorials.

7 Rhetoric Alignment in the Editorials 7.1 Introduction In the previous chapters, this research has been developed mainly from two perspectives: linguistic and discoursal. The former focuses on the linguistic realization of evaluation at a more local level. The latter emphasizes how evaluation operates in a single editorial discourse. Based on the evaluation types in the editorials the types of them in the data are then worked out. In this chapter, evaluation in the editorials will probed from a dialogistic perspective, that is, how evaluation functions in positioning the audience. 7.2 Interpersonal rhetoric in the editorials In the previous sections, evaluation in the editorials has been revisited from linguistic and discoursal perspectives. Based on the above discussions, a detailed discussion of how the propositions in which evaluation occurs are presented to the audience will be advanced in this chapter. In other words, a dialogistic perspective will be adopted here. The way what is formulated is presented to the audience implies a kind of alignment of the putative readers. Put another way, when the author of the editorials attempts to convey attitudes or obligation/necessity to the readers, he has assumed in his own mind what kind of response this may elicit in the reader. The author may take it for granted that reader will adopt his formulation or may think his formulation needs to be presented in an entertaining way since the reader may have alternative voices.
