Chapter 9. The Enthymeme in Composition Studies: Discourse Analysis in Specialized Medical Texts

A. Introduction

This chapter presents to students an interesting didactic proposal, which aims at observing the different ways in which the rhetorical structure of the enthymeme is used in the analysis of discourse in the field of health sciences. The enthymeme, a three-part deductive argument, lets students produce consistent and logical argumentative texts related to their field of study. Therefore, the use of this rhetorical structure can be considered, from our point of view, as a technique which gives clarity, precision and readability to medical arguments. These characteristics are essential in medical language, a language in which the enthymeme makes students conscious of the development of argumentation in different specialized medical texts. Moreover, this technique can be applied to a wide variety of texts in the field of health sciences such as the research article, the forensic report, the autopsy report, the autopsy protocol, the medical prescription, health and death certificates, etc.
