Law No. 26 of the Region of Sardinia on the Promozione e valorizzazione della cultura e della lingua della Sardegna was promulgated in 1997 in recognition of the equal distinction of Sardinian to Italian. It gave the Sardinian language a stronger identity and importance compared to other forms of cultural expression, as indicated in the following article of law:
