New Critical Perspectives on Franco-Irish Relations

This collection of critical essays proposes new and original readings of the relationship between French and Irish literature and culture. It seeks to re-evaluate, deconstruct and question artistic productions and cultural phenomena while pointing to the potential for comparative analysis between the two countries. The volume covers the French wine tradition, the Irish rebellion and the weight of religious and cultural tradition in both countries, seeking to examine these familiar topics from unconventional perspectives. Some contributors offer readings of established figures in Irish and French literature, from Flann O’Brien to Albert Camus; others highlight writers who have been left outside the critical frame, including Sydney Owenson, Jean Giono and Katherine Cecil Thurston. Finally, the volume explores areas such as sport, education, justice and alternative religious practices, generating unexpected and thought-provoking cultural connections between France and Ireland.

GERARD CONNOLLY recently completed his MA thesis Bande à Part: Céline, Cendrars, Giono and the Legacy of the Great War at the National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies, IT Tallaght, Dublin. He has previously received an MA from the University of Limerick for a dissertation on the English translations of Céline’s Voyage au bout de la nuit. Aside from literature and politics, his research interests include library and information studies. He currently works in the library at the Institute of Technology, Tallaght.

IMELDA ELLIOTT is a professor of Irish and British civilization. She is currently Head of the School of Modern Languages at the Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale (ULCO), Boulogne, France. Her research interests fall under the broad headings of Irish culture and society, education policy and language education. Her book on higher education (Irlande: l’enseignement supérieur en mutation 1960–1997) was published in 2007 and her work on secondary education (Irlande: la politique de l’enseignement du second degré 1963–1998) is due to be published in 2015. She studied English literature and French, and did her teaching qualification (Higher Diploma in Education) in UCD. She also graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris (Doctorate) and from Rennes University (HDR). She taught English at the secondary level before becoming a lecturer of Irish and British civilization. She was an Irish government scholar in UCD in 1990–1. She is the director of the Masters in Teaching and Learning in the field of Modern Languages...
