Series:

The Blinding: an Image of Samson in the Old Testament and the Fine Arts

Extract

Abstract

In a complex world of the twentieth century, the interest in religions, myths is still observed, like in all earlier times. Their function is always the same: to underline particular major values and problems of societal life (Pasaulio religijos, 2007). The Bible, a collection of Christian and Jewish sacred books, the fundamental of their religion and rituals, was and is being investigated by researchers of various areas of interest. Recent archaeological explorations more frequently have proved that characters described in the Bible are not imaginary ones, but rather real people who lived in a certain period. Samson is one of such characters; his image was recreated in both the Bible and the fine arts. Samson was outstanding for his physical power, wild temperament and he highly attracted women. It is supposed that a real historical person was a prototype of this image; he perished due to his weakness for women. According to explanations suggested by exegetes, the image of Samson originates from an ancient deity of the Sun (Krikščionybės ikonografijos žodynas, 1997).
