This book focuses on Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, philosopher and controversial artist. It expresses the opinions of philosophers, museologists and artists, for whom Stanisław Ignacy Witkacy’s 130th birthday anniversary became an opportunity to view his works from the perspective of postmodernity. The authors concentrate on Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz as eminent and prophetic philosopher concerned about Western culture with its waning metaphysical feelings, master of gesture and poses, anticipating the postmodern theatricalization of life.

Where Adorno Meets Witkacy. Common Philosophical Themes

Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885–1939) and Theodor Wiesengrund Adorno (1903–1969) are two completely different persons, as, for example, the circles which they influenced were really different. Witkacy’s works feed only the Polish imagination while Adorno is the author shaping not only the European but also the whole Western culture. Adorno was rooted in the formation of The Frankfurt School, supported by its institutional base – The Institute for Social Research, from which he started and which he developed later. On the other hand, Witkacy was a natural philosophical “skirmisher” and artistic outsider from Zakopane. That is probably why their appearance was also different. Witkacy, an eternal wit and mocker, seems to be the opposite of Adorno’s academic manners which were frequently haughty and restrained.

Nevertheless, perhaps there are more similarities than differences between them. They both, for example, showed musical inclinations. Young Staś [Stanisław] evoked astonishment and delight in his parents’ visitors while playing the piano. On the other hand, Adorno brought up by his mother – a singer, and her sister - a pianist, not only received a thorough education in the best German music conservatories but also composed music himself. Furthermore, they both abandoned music – Witkacy soon became interested in painting and literature whereas Adorno became engaged in philosophy and essay writing a short time later.1 However, a considerably more important relationship can be noticed in their theoretical works....
