The book provides a compilation of idiosyncratic manifestations of information society in techno-economic, political and cultural spheres. The contributors focus on the increasing complexity within information societies. To manage this complexity, societies develop constantly evolving context-specific modes of meta-governance. The contributions allow a better understanding of well-known conceptualizations and definitions of information society and related concepts such as post-industrial society, post-modernity, as well as network society, and knowledge society.

Networking of Business Elite in the Information Society: The Case of Interlocking Directorates
Abstract: Contemporary business elite gain and retain their privileged position, power and ability to control society through merging in (in)formal networks, as one of the crucial characteristics of the information society. The latter is linked with the network society and networking as one of the key element of the new economy. The information society and new economy are the result of globalisation, therefore we speak about the decentralised phenomenon, which needs a linker in order to operate successfully. This linkers are the so-called business elite, who merge in interlocking directorates, which are reserved for privileged individuals in order to gain power and impact society. The latter is formed through strong networks (ties) in the inner circle in interlocking directorates, which provide access to relevant business-related information for important business transactions, which enable significant economic and non-economic profits for the economic elite. In this sense, the business elite act as crucial (decision making) actors in the globalised information society.
