A Study on Book Evaluation Skills of the Students at Turkish Language Department Kocaeli University as a Sample

The Purpose

It has been a repeated and unchanging fact for many years that Turkey is a country where the reading habit is rather low. This leads to some results that we can easily observe in daily life. Just a few of them can be listed as follows; not having individual and social communication, not expressing themselves accurately and substantially both in written and spoken ways, and being deprived of analytical thinking skills in most fields of social life. The fact that Turkey has recently indicated a very unsuccessful graph in PISA, which also appeared in the media, is directly a part of this problem. The main problem of the students who cannot understand a text even in their native language, and who have difficulties in expressing themselves both in written and spoken methods can be explained with the fact that they are completely indifferent to the act of reading or sometimes ‘totally strangers.’ This article is mostly based on this issue, which should be discussed later in the long-term. In this article, the question of ‘What attitudes did the Turkish Language teachers have towards the reading habit when they were students?’ is researched.
