The book focuses on European Integration in the Field of Higher Education and Research, as well as the Implementation of the Bologna Process in Slovenia. The common policy of higher education and research belongs to the most important fields in the process of European integration and to the constitutive elements of the European Union. The authors analyse the process constituting the framework of higher education and research policy in Poland and Slovenia. The book analyses the political process of transformation within these two member states of the EU and exemplifies their plurality and specificity which are integrated in the genuine European idea of education, science and the research community.

Besides the questions concerning sustainable economic growth, societal development and political conflicts in the international and global dimensions as one of the most important fields of social life appear the systems of higher education and research, which reflect the condition of the contemporary societies but also design the development paths in the future. In this way higher education is the focus of society with the passing changes, convergences and tensions constituting social life from the one hand, and the ongoing research in different disciplines of the contemporary science from the other hand. At the same time higher education and research programmes indicate the possibilities and limits of society in the future.
In this manner the following considerations and analyses are focused on the pivotal issues which determine the development of higher education and research, especially with regard to the question concerning higher education and research policy understood as the framework of development, but also as a policy which affirms and integrates the coming changes and challenges. The analyses consisting of three topics enclose the major issues designing the present higher education, science and research as the decisive elements of social and political life: 1) the elaborated in the last decade new orientation in the policy of higher education and research, 2) European research initiatives and policy in global comparison, and 3) the characteristics of higher education and research in Poland.
