Industry 4.0 from the MIS Perspective

Nowadays, an end-to-end industrial transformation called Industry 4.0 sets new goals for manufacturing and impacts on business outcomes. With some of its characteristic elements such as IoT (Internet of Things), digital twin simulation models, advanced robots, big data analytics, and virtual/augmented reality, Industry 4.0 is «de facto» going further. The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area of Management Information Systems (MIS) with the scope of Industry 4.0. The strategic role of Industry 4.0 in the distributed business environment and the necessity to protect and properly utilize its key elements at different levels of organizations as well as in society are discussed.

Industry 4.0 Revolution in Clothing and Apparel Factories: Apparel 4.0

1.  Introduction

The clothing and apparel industry, which is one of the main sectors of the industrialization movement for developing countries, involves the use of fabric and materials to produce men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, knitted underwear and outerwear. This sector has contributed significantly to Turkey’s economy in recent years. It has 16 % of Turkey’s total exports in 2016, which is the second largest share after the automotive industry (TEA, 2017). Turkey ranks fifth in the world, based on apparel exports. Since the 1950s, clothing and apparel industry is Turkey’s leading sector in terms of employment. The number of apparel companies in Turkey is around 35,000, and about 500,000 people are employed at these companies.

With the removal of exportation quotas applied to China in 2005, the clothing and apparel sector has started having difficulties with competing in global markets, especially against Chinese firms. In order to survive in this tough global competitive market, apparel manufacturers need to transform their manufacturing processes toward having a more flexible production system to meet the rapid changes in the global market, delivering orders to customers as early as possible to meet increased customer expectations, using the human workforce more efficiently to achieve high productivity levels and utilizing all resources effectively.
