Industry 4.0 from the MIS Perspective

Nowadays, an end-to-end industrial transformation called Industry 4.0 sets new goals for manufacturing and impacts on business outcomes. With some of its characteristic elements such as IoT (Internet of Things), digital twin simulation models, advanced robots, big data analytics, and virtual/augmented reality, Industry 4.0 is «de facto» going further. The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area of Management Information Systems (MIS) with the scope of Industry 4.0. The strategic role of Industry 4.0 in the distributed business environment and the necessity to protect and properly utilize its key elements at different levels of organizations as well as in society are discussed.

1.  Introduction

Since Industry 4.0 has been announced as the financial, political and scientific future vision of Germany in Hannover Exhibition in 2011, its importance has gradually increased (Kagermann & Lukas, 2011). Germany’s persistent policy on Industry 4.0 is supported by Chancellor Angela Merkel on the highest level. In one of the speeches which she gave in 2016, she emphasized that data protection and data processing are two competing elements, and in order to be a leader in automobile industry, it is important to utilize digital data instead of using protective law (Kollmann & Schmidt, 2016).

Industry 4.0 refers to three previous major changes. While the first three breakthrough could be explained with terms like mechanization, automation and computerizing, the last switchback can be translated in Turkish as “informatization” (Thuemmler & Bai, 2017). Informatics is related with software just like computerizing stage. While computerizing focuses on increasing activity and efficiency, informatics aims to increase system functionality by using the influence of real-world creatures on real world who were transformed into digital world. Its main theme is to provide integrated, digital and optimum production flow.
