Industry 4.0 from the MIS Perspective

Nowadays, an end-to-end industrial transformation called Industry 4.0 sets new goals for manufacturing and impacts on business outcomes. With some of its characteristic elements such as IoT (Internet of Things), digital twin simulation models, advanced robots, big data analytics, and virtual/augmented reality, Industry 4.0 is «de facto» going further. The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area of Management Information Systems (MIS) with the scope of Industry 4.0. The strategic role of Industry 4.0 in the distributed business environment and the necessity to protect and properly utilize its key elements at different levels of organizations as well as in society are discussed.

Augmented Reality 4.0: Opportunities and Challenges for Smart Factories

1.  Introduction

The recent industrial revolution named as Industry 4.0 shapes new digital industrial technologies that especially create disruptive changes in the process of industrial production. The philosophy of Industry 4.0 has produced the smart factory of the future, driven by cyber-physical systems (CPS). CPS refers to the physical production steps of Industry 4.0 that are accompanied by computer-based processes (Schmidt et al., 2015). In accordance with the Industry 4.0 approach, the consolidation of processes and network abilities equipped with latest technology in factory-set (Gorecky, Schmitt, Loskyll & Zühlke et al., 2014) as machines, robots, devices, applications, services, systems, products and people are all interconnected via Internet in a smart way.

The next-generation of the Internet is called as the “Internet of Things” (IoT). IoT represents a universal system that merging overall objects such as computer networks, sensors, actuators and devices via Internet within the bounds of possibility (Fantana et al., 2013). Thus, Industry 4.0 and IoT describe a paradigm shift in production technology (Valdeza et al., 2015). However, they are not only boosting manufacturing productivity, but also shifting economics, creating significant investments, fostering industrial growth and even revenue growth, modifying the profile of the workforce by building up technical capacity and abilities of employees in the development of software systems as well as information and communication systems (Rüßmann...
