Nowadays, an end-to-end industrial transformation called Industry 4.0 sets new goals for manufacturing and impacts on business outcomes. With some of its characteristic elements such as IoT (Internet of Things), digital twin simulation models, advanced robots, big data analytics, and virtual/augmented reality, Industry 4.0 is «de facto» going further. The book aims to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area of Management Information Systems (MIS) with the scope of Industry 4.0. The strategic role of Industry 4.0 in the distributed business environment and the necessity to protect and properly utilize its key elements at different levels of organizations as well as in society are discussed.

Challenges and Opportunities of Logistics 4.0: Reflections from Industry 4.0
The industry is undergoing a major change. After mechanization, industrialization and automation, it has now reached the threshold of the fourth revolution: digitization and networking. Used today in factories, manufacturing processes will be made more efficient, smarter, more controllable and more transparent in the near future. Industrial processes will be interconnected through the network by using modern communication and information technologies to create continuous improvements in the production process. With the help of these new digital production methods, companies will be able to respond more easily to individual customer needs and consolidate their competitive edge in global markets.
Today, about 10% of companies in the manufacturing industry have passed the Industry 4.0 components. As an Industry 4.0 supplier, this ratio doubles in the area of machinery and plant engineering. Currently, 5.6% of machinery and plant engineering companies are at the advanced level of application of these technologies. A fewer than 18% of businesses are working to understand Industry 4.0 and are making preparations to put it into practice (IW Consult/FIR, 2015). In addition, there are comparable findings of Industry 4.0 processes and technologies in their work. Both large companies and SMEs have a great desire to use intelligent services, such as assessing big data generated during production processes or networked production processes (IW Consult/FIR, 2015; Techconsult, 2015).
