Interactive Practices on Educational Radio

From Australia to Turkey

The main objective of this book is to propose a new interactive educational radio model for Turkey. Thus, six educational, community and university-based radio stations in Australia were researched. In terms of representing the entire country and all educational radio broadcasting practices, samples were selected from different structures and cities of Australia. After obtaining required data in the participant observation process, in-depth interviews with radio representatives were carried out. It was questioned, what the basic factors of effective educational radio stations are, how today's broadcasting technologies affect the relationship between radio and its audience and how interpersonal communication process reflects new radio broadcasting practices.

Today’s radio broadcasting contents have been often criticized by both industrial and academic circles for practices that are far from traditional functions. These criticisms point to the fact that radio is increasingly moving away from the functions of news, education, and culture, putting forward the music-entertainment contents. Radio is a medium that can be adapted most easily to different media because of its audio-based technique and today’s technological possibilities. This also provides the ground for increasing its prevalence. In addition to traditional radio broadcasting applications, today’s web-based radio stations are everywhere in our lives with several concepts, such as school (college, university, etc.) radio stations, in-store radio stations, hospital radio stations, smart and social radio stations. Thanks to interactive options, the radio has improved its interpersonal communication skills with the audience and undertaken important tasks by evolving from the early years of distance education practices.

Radio broadcasting practices in Turkey and commercial radio stations, in particular, serve as an advertising tool for music producers. The educational and cultural functions of the radio have been ignored, and the only content that can be designed for auditory elements by sector professionals has been assumed just music. In order to discern this misconception, the concept of radio has to be re-designed through the new communication technologies in company with its traditional functions.
