An Investigation of Ongoing Tactile Communication in a Preschool Classroom
Abstract: Purpose: Touch is a vital tool for human communication and has been shown to be an integral part of education. The various ways in which we display touch has been extensively researched in many contexts and cultures, however only a few studies have considered touch in a Turkish cultural context. Therefore, the current study sought to investigate a preschool teacher’s tactile communication practices by considering contextual factors (location, activity type, duration of touch, body part that is touched, purpose of touch, initiator of touch and gender of child) with a class of preschool children. Method: An experienced preschool teacher and her class of children in Ankara were chosen as a sample. Non-participatory observation sessions were conducted over a period of five whole school days and data were recorded by the researchers using a self-developed observation form. Findings: Touch is most was likely to be initiated by the teacher and male children received touch more than female children. During these touch interactions children’s hand, head, arm, and shoulder are preferred as body parts. Additionally, a strong association was observed between type of touch and purpose of touch, with most interactions being friendly, attentional or helpful and intended to guide, reward, reinforce, love, or assist. Implications for Research and Practice: Teachers’ awareness regarding tactile communication can be supported in order to prevent representation of traditional gender roles.
