Chapter 5 Should We Stay or Should We Go? – A Longitudinal Study of the Significance of Affiliation to the Danish Labour Market and Linked Lives for Outmigration Patterns for European Immigrants in Denmark
As in other western countries, the change in the composition of the population in Denmark is due to a globalisation of migration as well as an acceleration of migration (Castles and Miller 2009: 10–11). Despite the financial crisis and the structural changes in the Danish labour market, the influx of European migrant workers has increased, particularly in the context of the phasing out of the East agreement (Østaftalen) in 2008.1 In addition, Denmark has special arrangements for giving work permits to highly and specially qualified immigrants, and has given asylum to refugees from war – most recently from Syria.
The aim of this chapter is to describe the immigration to Denmark, and the change of the population in Denmark within the last decades. After this short introduction, the chapter focuses on immigrants from Europe and their potential settlement and outmigration by analyses of the duration of stay of these immigrants and their reasons for possible outmigration, in order to discuss how migrants from Europe add to the Danish population and labour force.
