This label has been attached to the film Babel from 2006 by the Mexican director Alejañdro Iñárritus. In terms of content, it is easy to see why. An American couple joins a tourist group on a bus trip in Mo- rocco. Out of the blue the wife is seriously wounded by an accidental gunshot, but survives under chaotic and primitive conditions, helped by the locals. Simul- taneously, the accident is broadcasted worldwide in the TV news. At the same time in Japan, a rich and widowed businessman’s deaf-mute daughter desperate- ly throws herself into the hectic urban life of drugs and discos. Her father has been on a hunting trip to Morocco and rewarded his guide with a gun. Now, the weapon ends up in the hands of two goat herding boys who for fun fire a couple of shots towards the Americans’ passing tour bus. In LA a Mexican nanny leaves with the children in her care to take part in her son’s wedding just on the other side of the Mexican border. After a colourful party, somewhat exotic for the two American children, everything gets out of hand during their return trip. The driv- er, the nanny’s nephew, has not yet sobered up and drives madly away from the police, drops his aunt and the two...
