The present paper focuses on the interactional organization of the foreign language classroom. With methods of conversational analysis it looks at communicative social action in interactional sequences of foreign language instruction, as organized by novices and expert teachers. This paper argues that early instruction in sociolinguistic methods helps novices to gain analytic competencies as to their own language teaching. New teachers need to find their way through the broad repertoire of pedagogical suggestions, teaching methods and approaches in order to become reflective practitioners and to develop their own teaching style and habitus as a foreign language teacher.
