Introduction Universities, which train students who represent the future of a society, refer to several physical buildings, a community, and research and education activities performed therein. Today, universities, which are located in the cities as a result of the increasing number of the urban population and the expansion of the cit- ies, have started to look for different physical locations. The ever-changing social and cultural needs of society forced the university to plan wide areas outside of the city. This is how the concept of the “campus” as playing a significant role in the development of students through social and cultural activities apart from providing education emerged. Therefore, in the design of campus spaces, not only education, teaching, and research spaces, but also social and cultural activ- ity spaces, which ensure personal and social development of students, should be careful planned. Although the importance of social and cultural activity spaces on student development is well known, today, we can see that the campus’ outdoor spaces do not meet the needs of students and are not used at a desirable level. This study aims to investigate why the spatial organisation of the campus that is designed to meet the needs and requirements of its young users (Gür, 1996) is not used at a desired level.
