Abstract: The proposition of the Swiss army knife of literature didactics ultimately asserts that all educational goals of teaching literature can be achieved with the narrative textbook. In the first place, this concerns accessible language of informational texts, including ‘creative writing’ as a student competence. It also involves an aesthetic feel for language with regard to rhetorical devices and variants of figurative language and, last but not least, reflective and argumentative skills as core competences when dealing with informational texts. Concurrently, however, (fictional) narrative structures can also be worked on, including the creation of such by the students. The related awareness for fiction can serve as a basis for every media competence and results in the ability to aesthetically appreciate and create. Finally, the narrative textbook can also be used to approach solutions to the notorious problems of gender as well as class differentiation in the area of reading competence.
