A Comparison of Asian Tigers’ (Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong) Education Systems


Abstract: Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong, known as Asian Tigers or Asian Dragons, symbolise the economic power of Asia. These countries and nations were remarkable for their unusually sustaining high rates of economic growth and their rapid industrialisation between the early 1960s and 1990s. Of these nations and areas, Hong Kong and Singapore have become world-leading international financial centers, whereas South Korea and Taiwan are world leaders in manufacturing information technology. These countries have developed by means of their intellectual capital. Human capital has played a significant role in the transition of these countries from undeveloped, agricultural societies to developed industrial and knowledge-based societies and in their rapid growth. They have also spent a significant amount of money on education and on providing skills. They have increased the quality and the amount of human capital via education and they consider education as an investment field. These countries have finally felt the positive result of these applications and policies. In this study, the education systems of Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong - the four Asian Tigers - which have significant roles in the world economy, have been analysed using the document analysis method. Furthermore, the curricula at all levels (Pre-school Education, Primary Education, Secondary Education, Higher Education, Vocational and Technical Education, and Special Needs Education), educational statistics, and investment in education in these countries are also included in a comparative way in this study.
