Introduction

The preschool stage has a big impact on an individuals’ ability to establish healthy social relationships. Also, during this period, the individuals develop social skills that will accompany them in every period of life. While this stage has a significant place in the development of the child’s positive behaviours, some undesired behaviours can appear beside rapid and ongoing development. Preschool education is an important process not only to prevent or eliminate children’ undesired behaviours, but also to form social skills that the child needs to acquire.

Social skills are defined as socially accepted learned behaviours that direct individuals to give positive reactions to others, prevent negative reactions, and include both observable and unobservable cognitive and affective elements (Durualp & Aral, 2011). According to Cook (2003), during the development process, the family guides the children in order to develop socially accepted behaviours and children start acquiring social skills through their relationships with their parents or their caretakers. Then children develop their social skills through their participation in different social groups.

Preschool education, which is the first step of education process, after the family, plays an important role in children recognising their own body; joining different groups; communicating healthily with other people; expressing their emotions and thoughts easily to other people; developing social skills such as sharing, cooperation, helping each other, and interdependence; and accommodating to a social setting (Aral et al., 2003).
