Writing Challenges Faced by International Students in Academic Writing
International students have an increasingly significant presence in many universities in Malaysia. Lecturers are aware of the problems that these students encounter ranging from language to adjusting to different educational practices and social customs. One of the adjustments students have to make is to use the English language in their studies. It is argued that many overseas students from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) encounter various levels of language difficulties, especially during their initial periods of study (Braine, 2002). Braxley (2005) believes that unless students’ existing proficiency is of quite a high standard, they will experience great difficulty in succeeding in tertiary studies.
Many international students believe that the colleges and universities that they enrolled in would provide them with a good education and support. Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College (KLIUC) is no exception. KLIUC is a multilingual and multicultural institution. The institution has almost 300 academics with a sprinkling of academics from foreign countries, the majority being locals. KLIUC has almost 4,000 students and almost 1,000 of them are international.
The language used for studies at KLIUC is mainly English. Unsurprisingly, one of the main language problems faced by the international students is the need to write in English. Writing in a second language is a complex, challenging, and difficult process.
