Abstract The publisher has a central role in the “making” of an author. What goes on between the reception of the manuscript and its publication is however unclear, leaving the door wide open to speculation, particularly in the case of African authors. Is there fabrication of an “African” literary work? And what strategy have African authors adopted versus the European editorial “fortress”? How has the relationship between the author and the publisher evolved in recent literary history.
