Social Aspects of Psycholinguistic Research: Reflections on the Ongoing Study of Cognitive and Linguistic Development of Polish Immigrant Children
One of the goals of scientific explorations is to inform everyday practices. As researchers studying bilingualism, we are obliged to provide parents and practitioners with conclusions that can help to guide child upbringing and develop education strategies as well as clinical diagnosis. A great challenge to meet these goals is an everyday practice of scientific inquiry, and participant recruitment, in particular. Here we share our observations on a project1 that we are currently completing which aims at establishing cognitive and linguistic developmental trajectories of preschool children of Polish origin growing up out of Poland. After almost three years of putting considerable effort into participant recruitment and project logistics abroad, we are reaching the end of the project. Although we successfully examined over 300 hundred children in Poland and 150 hundred children abroad, we are more than ever aware of the critical questions: Is it possible to develop tailor-cut recommendations for parents and practitioners based on empirical evidence? What are the limitations that research meets when informing life practices? In what follows we briefly present background of the ongoing research project and discus issues that put some constraints on the participant sample representativeness. ← 77 | 78 →
