Graphical User Interface Prototyping for Distributed Requirements Engineering

Finding and understanding the right requirements is essential for every software project. This book deals with the challenge to improve requirements engineering in distributed software projects. The use of graphical user interface (GUI) prototypes can help stakeholders in such projects to elicit and specify high quality requirements. The research objective of this study is to develop a method and a software artifact to support the activities in the early requirements engineering phase in order to overcome some of the difficulties and improve the quality of the requirements, which should eventually lead to better software products. Therefore, this study seeks to support the work with these prototypes in distributed projects. It is based on a theoretical analysis and follows a design science research approach.

4. Designed Artifacts


4.1. A Method for Distributed GUI Prototyping

The previous sections have shown why requirements engineering should benefit from GUI prototypes and that there is a need for a method for GUI prototyping in distributed software development projects. This method has to be supported by a tool which enables the distributed collaboration on the prototypes. Furthermore, theoretical concepts have been introduced and design implications for such a method and tool have been derived from those. In the following, the method based on these design implication is introduced. A software engineering method is an approach, which describes more or less precisely a way to systematically solve a software development problem (Heinrich et al., 2011). Thus, the next sections describe the way to solve the collaboration problems for distributed GUI prototyping. First, a conceptual overview of the new method is provided and its steps are depicted. After this, two example scenarios are presented.
