The Role of Health Capital in Health Promotion

You could ask any man or woman on the street to name the most important three things in their lives and one of their choices would be health. Everyone appreciates health and wishes they would stay healthy for their whole life span. What things does health consist of then? How can one cherish it? What promotes health? Are there some factors that one could gather in order to improve health and that would ‘pay dividend’?

French sociologist Bourdieu1,2 has analyzed the concept of capital and developed a theory of capital types. O’Rand3 has furthered Bourdieu’s thinking by adding the number of capital types and perspectives. Their work challenges researchers to look for other possible capital types that have already been brought out in various disciplines.
